In the scene with the spooky little girls singing to General Montcalm, Montcalm speaks with Magua and asks him why he hates the gray hair. Magua's answer has always been odd to me no matter how many times I watch the movie. He says, "Before the Gray Hair dies I will put under the knife his children so that he will know his seed is wiped from the earth forever." I never thought that really fit there but thought that phrase would fit better when Montcalm and Magua speak alone in the forest about the peace that was made.
In that scene he explained his hatred for the Gray Hair.
Always thought those two lines should have been switched around.
It may be just me but wanted to know if anyone else thought the same. |

And what do ya' know...Rich knew the answer! I think. How should I know, when I don't even have a clue.

Hey, the script's on the site (see the link above). It is based on the 1936 script. I would love to compare the two. I have the 1936 movie, but what makes it to the screen is not necessarily what's in the script. |

Good idea, Light...! I was actually thinking along the same lines as Red - but was being lazy, since I don't have any of the source material handy.  Maybe Fitz has a better clue? |

I wasn't comparing them in anyway. It is soooooo obvious there is no comparison...just cutting up a little.
As far as the other cheif - good question. Never thought of it before. Maybe Fitz would know since he seems to have something of the script for that scene.

There were several different NA tribes allied with the French during the war, I think. If Magua is supposed to be a Huron leader, perhaps the other, silent guy is chief of one of the other allied tribes?

 Good point, Seamus... I'd forgotten that one! Maybe it was Rock N' Roll heaven I was thinking of... more like a "Band of Gypsies"? Maybe I'd get to see Hendrix play live there, since I never did in this world.  Boy, am I showing my age here - and getting off thread! 
Didn't we start out talking about Magua and Montcalm... after "those "spooky little girls", as Light put it, finish singing the Sanctus. I agree with her on that part of the "Munro revenge thing" being out of place, logicaly. I think they stuck it in where they did to adavnce the emotional impact and pace of the story? Just to confuse us even more, does anyone know who the other Chief in there (who doesn't have any lines), to whom Montcalm speaks first, might have been? |

So it seems. Hollywood - go figure.
Well the script seemed to answer the question but still makes no sense and apparently confuses the audience a bit.
Red, your answer seems to explain the reasoning behind the elusive answer he gives.
And Obi, you are too funny! How about Faith Hill's "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart". |

[Montcalm won't get a direct answer.]

That's why he didn't give a direct answer. He followed the script! |

Yes, it has always been a tad confusing the way Magua answers Montcalm; I've just never looked at it before. I think Red's analysis is very close to the mark. 
Since the title of this thread is "Magua Speaks," maybe I should have started a new thread, entitled "Magua Sings." Obviously, his favorite song would have to be "You Gotta Have Heart!" |

Yes . . . Magua with a "snoot" full is definitely not a character I'd want to meet after happy hour! 
Interestingly enough (excuse me while I wax dorky for a moment  ), the reason why Magua hates Munro so much in the novel is that Magua got sloppy drunk in camp and Munro had him tied to a pole and whipped in front of everyone. Magua was so totally humiliated that he couldn't go back to his own tribe, and he became a slave to the Delaware, his wife became the wife of another, etc. So I guess the guy can't hold his liquor!
As for why Magua doesn't answer Montcalm in the tent, I think maybe he didn't want to answer when there were other people around. Montcalm is his French "father" and ranks higher than him, so it would be OK to tell him a humiliating story about the past. But maybe Magua doesn't want the lower-ranking soldiers to overhear, so he waits till he and the general are alone. In the tent, then, he deflects the question and talks about putting the Grey Hair's children under the knife to keep up a menacing appearance in front of the regular rank-and-file Frenchies (?).
I dunno.  Never really thought about it before! |

It always seemed a little odd to me also, like Magua sort of ignored Montcalm's question and was almost talking to himself. But then Mauga was a little odd anyway. Not the kind of guy you want to meet when you stagger out of Bumppo's Tavern at 2 AM. |
