Why Cora and Alice were left behind under the falls?

When I watched it the first time I couldn't quite make out what Hawkeye was saying and I was kind of shocked by what they did. I don't think that Hawkeye had supernatural ability to see the future[;)]. I don't know what they should have done, maybe try to run away together or maybe he staye with the girls, otherwise it looks rather unhonorable to me and it doesn't suit these men.

Also, from their conversations earlier in that scene it seemed quite likely that they would be found by Magua under teh falls, so why did they stay there in the first place? There must have been some better alternarives..

And it looks like you have a great one. But, I still say part of the greatness of the movie is that it is beloved for what it is even all this time later. Making it into a soap opera would ruin it. Let's "leave them where they lay" and hope for new things in which to see the great actors from the movie. And Obi, I do agree with you. Without Magua the movie would have been only a shadow of itself. Wes is a great actor, isn't he?

I agree with you winglo/i know they died...No HARM IN BRING BACK A SPIRIT...wink wink!!!....They could've survived-or even better,could've been a dream-someone paying tricks on there minds-like Magua-they did have this power-i know it gets abit techinical-but an idear and a half i think....i know my mind is running wild.....winglo-so sorry...trying to be imaginative thats all...no-way could a remake be done with-out fine actors and the same scence of feel of the original film anyway....think about it....it just would not-work or be the same .....but i beleive in 20 years on.....Russell Means looks great for his age....anyone seen a recent picture of him...looks alright..and Eric-well..he still has his great looks/he definately looks after his skin....as im sure his health...he just needs to work out with a great trainer....but i also hear when you say Eric may want to move on from the The Film.....but the film is selling hear fast still in the uk....and alot of fans out there too...we all know about.

As I've said many a time, Magua made the movie what it is...no Magua, no movie. ...and let's not forget the late, unlamented "Captain Crunch." He didn't quite survive the flick, either. As far as "20 years later," didn't they already make something like that? Called "The Patriot?"

With the same original Charactors....maybe my imgination is running wild...but a thought ....would be a blockbuster im sure

For Hawkeye, especially, seems like it is a hard decision and he even says to Cora that if they are not killed then they will be taken to the Huron up North or something like that and the famous line of course "stay alive, no matter what occurs, I will find you". There must have been some doubt in his mind about what their fate would be. He truly loved Cora and for him to just take off like that seems out of character. They say that if they stay there under the falls and Magua finds them there will be a fight and they could all be killed but if they go then they have a chance at least that they will not be killed. He knows Magua wants Cora dead so why would he not think that Magua would just kill Cora and probably Alice right there and then. I know they could not have gone on on foot across country when they ditched the canoes. Magua would have undoubtedly caught up with them easily but then again maybe luck would have been on their side and they could have made it to safety. It was a very hard decision for Hawkeye to make although the "trio" all made it together. The first time I saw this I wondered why they did not all jump through the falls but I doubt if they could all have survived. I guess the "trio" must have done something like this before or just hoped they could make it. They were lucky not to have been killed themselves. Cora also telling them to go seemed strange to me. She must have been terrified too although she does not show it and is very protective of Alice, yet she tells them to leave. I don't think I would have said that in her position. I would want the man I love and who supposedly loves me to stay and fight not run off and leave me. Well you asked and those are my thoughts on this.
