I have watched this movie so many times my tape had to be replaced! The one thing I have never understood from my very first viewing is...why didn't everyone jump through the falls with Hawkeye, Uncas, and Chingachgook?
My sister thinks the jump would have killed the frail white folk but I find that hard to believe.
So yeah you may walk (or crawl) away with a few bruises or broken bones but it would have saved so much drama and possibly our beloved Uncas' life! Oh and Duncan could've gotten to skip out on being that night's bar-b-que special.
Call me a tomboy but I would have hiked my skirt up, took a flying leap through the water, and hoped that I wouldn't hit any big rocks!
Any opinions on the matter? |

I think I kinda' like the whole idea of a mensus hut. Just think about getting out of all the hard labor once a month.
HHHMMMM ! It has possibilities for the lazy of heart!
And I still think the No Panty concept is comfortable! |

Ewwww that was a bad choice of words xHanx! I noticed that we all have this habit of starting of with one topic and somehow ending up on a really out there type of topic! I guess it's ok though since all of our minds seem to wander in the same direction! |

Have not checked board for a while, just seen how my innocent and not to mention tongue in cheek remark about bloomers started such a "interesting" discussion. Honestly. minds in the gutter. pft. but rest assured WW I can assure you that even if not invented at the time...I would have been a bloomers pioneer! *going off to search for some nice big leaves... :)

Nice to meet you too! About Uncas, I think that if he had been more patient, the three of them could have gone up and finished Mauga off without casualties, but I can understand his actions in the heat of the moment and being in love and all :) |

Hi Long Carbine, nice to meet you! I think you've pretty much summed up the situation at the falls too. Now as far as that bit about Uncas goes... I wouldn't scalp you, or even make you run a gauntlet - but I do think you're dead wrong about his judgement!;-)
And I completely agree with Monadnack that life was hard for *everybody* back then! Having said that, like a lot of the ladies here - I've often been grateful for the exclusively "feminine" conveniences we have right now, *and* for air conditioning. Imagine having a bad case of "the vapors", while having to lug all those skirts and petticoats around on a sweltering summer day on the frontier (or in the heart of Albany, for that matter?)! I am convinced this was Alice's problem when she asks Cora if they can stop for a rest at the beginning of their trip to the fort. ;-)

I remember the first time I ever read about this, thinking it was so cool! It would be such a welcome respite from the backbreaking work one had to engage in for the rest of the month! Really gives you something to consider if you've ever wondered whether it would be "better" to be a settler, or an Indian.

Hi everyone, what a great forum..
In response to the original quesion, the girls and Duncan needed to buy the time for the Mohicans the get the powder and rescue them. If they had jumped too, Hurons would have persued them and killed them all.
If it wasn't for Uncas' stupidity (I know some women would scalp me for this  ), they would have all survived except Duncan. But it would not have been as good a movie and not very romantic...

I was referring to the you know (hmmmmm) "The Monthly Enemy"....
Just reading about women back then not having the convenient stuff that us ladies have now could have been dreadful. I can't start to imagine the things they had to go through to deal with that.... |

WELL! How very interesting! I can understand that we "modern folk" might consider this to be a little "uncivilized" by today's standards; but it has also given me some idea about how "going commando" might have played into "The Kiss" between Hawkeye and Cora! Just remember the passionate looks between them during this scene, as Hawkeye lifts Cora in front of him and they continue their embrace...

Not sure that's exactly to way to look at it. Keeping a clean house was a lot of work, - but the husband's life wasn't any piece of cake either. With a piece of land that had to be tended to all the time, rails, fences, small barn, - and animals to tend to he was a tad on the busy side. There was more than enough work for both, - and it took the two of them to make a go of it. Dividing the work makes all the sense in the world, - too much for one. No "push button", chilled, frozen stuff. No snacks while watching a game or movie, - just early to bed, and up before dawn to do it all over again - for both. Besides, - there were undoubtly many times when being "inside" beat being outside by a mile! |

Yes indeed, - when "modern folks" long for a return to the "good ol' days" they know not where of they speak. Not really all that long ago, - when there were still out-houses in use, it was common to use a corn cob in place of toilet paper. That's before old Sears Cataloges of course. In fact back in the Northeast frontier days, - houses, cabins actually, were loaded with insects and in Spring Black Flies. To rid the house of them it was routinely "smoked". They would close the damper on the stove or chimney, and light a small fire. This would fill the cabin with heavy smoke, and usually resulted in fewer insects/fly's - and a massive clean-up job for the wife. Still better than living with them 24/7. |

Well, yes, it does seem rather strange to we 21st century ladies. But it is true that women wore no... er.... unmentionables on the lower half of their body until into the 19th century. And even then, their drawers had a split crotch! (Down, boys!) It was apparently well after the Civil War that women began wearing "closed" drawers.
Of course, during "that time of the month", they tied cloths on, possibly much like a man's breechclout.
But other than that...... Commando!! |

I agree with you there Chasis_22 I would have tucked my skirt into my bloomers, held my nose and taken a running jump.
However it is also true that "the feeble white folk" probably could not have taken the strain mentally or physically,judging how they struggled in the rest of the film, and the mohicans only had a few seconds to make a decision anyway. As somebody mentioned can you imagaine how long it would have taken to convince them it was a good idea, and what if they missed and ended up on a rock or something- very messy. The mohicans weighed up the odds and made a quick descision which they thought would have the most hopeful outcome.
These men were experienced and probably bounced off cliffs and hurled themselves from waterfalls all the time just for the hell of it, when not in the serious business from saving English Damsels in distress of course. possibly exagerating a teeeny bit there. Maybe. |

I also go with silentthunder also, I would have waited for magua and his people to come near and throw then in the falls. In my eyes, If I was part of the movie that what I would do. |

Strip down huh?? Sounds interesting, I probably would have done the same. Just for fun, I would've waited for Magua and one of his men to get close enough, so I could push them over the waterfall with me and use them as floats.  |

Don't get me wrong I am quite satisfied with the ending of the movie (except my hunny died) but I had always wondered why they didn't all jump. Had it been me I would have stripped down and took a flying leap through the water....sure it would probably be somewhat chilly and self degrading but I would be alive and wouldn't have had to see magua's face! |

Light of the Moon, - I don't think you read my earlier reply. For Cora & Alice to jump into the water with all those clothes on, - don't make a great deal of sense, except in a total panic I suppose. Some simple choices really, - death by Magua, drowning or jumping off a cliff. |

Also, lest one forget, the whole intent was to leave Alice & company behind for Magua & company. The whole object was to avoid a fight, - their powder being a tad damp, and of no use. Since they were "slightly" out number by Magua & company, - the movie probably would have had to end in the cave, with the final shot being a smiling Magua & friends. Maybe even a quick wink into the camera, as he turned around and headed back to Huron Land ... ;) |
