Posted - August 22 2002 : 11:46:45 PM There a many, many reasons I love LOTM, but the main reason I saw it 15 times in theatres was the love scene! It was incredibly well choreographed, but looked natural, and the expressions on Madeleine Stowe's face were simply sublime. This scene is more deeply stirring to my blood than any other love scene could possibly be! Definitely my favourite love scene of all time. If I could watch only one scene in LOTM, this would be it! How about you guys?

Posted - April 02 2004 : 12:25:42 AM There are many scenes that I like. Among them my favoriate are the energetic elk hunt scene, the quiet, yearninglook Uncas gave Alice in the river walk scene, the bittersweet moment when Uncas pulled Alice back from the waterfall and the two of them embraced each other, and also the climatic, heartbreaking cliff-top scenes. |

Posted - March 25 2004 : 10:14:33 PM Though I love all the scenes with Uncas, my favorite scene in the movie is "The Glade," when they are hiding from the Huron and the French in the burial ground. Cora comes and lays beside Nathaniel and he tells her of his past, speaking of the "sky" as a "mounument" to his folks and the Camerons, which is a wonderful tribute. And the music playing in the background is hauntingly beautiful. |

Posted - March 22 2004 : 8:59:51 PM My favorite is the beginning, one of the first few scenes, when Duncan runs from left to right, then, all of a sudden, he trips! okay, so its not the most heartfelt moment in the movie...but you have to admit, its funny! |

Posted - March 19 2004 : 05:21:07 AM First of all, I love the whole movie! But one of my favorite scenes is the scene before the love scene of hawkeye and cora. The way they find each other and follow each other to a quiet place without saying a thing... love it!And ofcourse the scene where they were hiding in the graveyard...

Posted - March 18 2004 : 8:23:25 PM Thanks to those of you who revived this thread -- I would have missed it otherwise.
My favorite is the scene inside Cameron's cabin, after Chingachgook, Uncas, and Hawkeye have been welcomed by the Camerons and Jack Winthrop. A relatively brief scene, but it establishes so much -- that these people of different backgrounds are very fond of each other, that they find themselves in a dangerous environment, and that for the moment they've found fellowship and refuge around the table. The golden lighting mimics firelight so beautifully, and the interior of the cabin is so visually rich -- I want the camera to pan slowly and look into every nook and cranny so that I can see what's there. (And then -- let's be honest here -- I want to OWN all of it! That, to me, is "Early American" decorating!) Of course, on second and subsequent viewings, the cabin scene also has an aura of sadness, because of what happens later. All in all, one of the many scenes that showcase the director's brilliance. |

Posted - March 18 2004 : 1:23:42 PM I never posted in this thread, I think because I was having such a difficult time picking just one scene to be my favorite. But I think I am ready now. I approached it this way: if someone told me I had to pick one scene and one scene only to watch if I were stranded on a desert island , this is the one I would pick.
From the moment Nathaniel tells his friends that he "has a reason to stay" and that the reason "is a lot better looking than you, Jack Winthrop"... to his purposeful stride as he walks through the fort, past the people resting and past the dancers, comes up beside Cora and takes her hand to lead her away to the rampart... I am in Heaven!
The music (The Gael, isn't it?), the lighting, the setting, the situation, and the utterly raw romance of that incredible attraction all work together to make this scene one of the most sensuous movie scenes ever made. I just adore it. |

My favorite scene is still the first scene I ever saw. I ran into LOTM by accident a few years ago while channel surfing and TNT was showing it over and over. I stopped channel surfing because of the music but stayed put because of the scene. A young man, apparantly an Indian, was scrambling almost on all fours up a steep rock slope, and then the scene panned beyond him to the complete beauty of the blue blue blue Blue Ridge Mountains. I didn't know what movie I was watching, and I certainly didn't know what story was going on that resulted in this scene, but I was gripped. I mean, gut-wrenchingly gripped. I watched to the end with almost no word spoken in the movie, and by that time I figured out this must be LOTM. I then watch the next two consecutive runs until about 2 or 3 in the morning.
I don't know why but I still find THAT scene the most poignant -- something about the man running for some desperate purpose while the grand and ancient blue mountains watch, and that music plays in the background...

Posted - September 27 2003 : 02:11:37 AM My favorite scene has to be when Chingachgook avenges Uncas' death. There's this incredible buildup of emotional tension, then satisfaction in hearing and almost feeling him bury his club in Magua's torso. It's as if he knows that he'll never be able to replace his son and he's just done the only thing that can give him any satisfaction. A hollow victory, but powerful nonetheless. |

Posted - May 02 2003 : 5:31:49 PM My favorite of all time is, of course, the love scene. From the moment they see each other across that firelit expanse, then he takes her hand and leads her away...the kissing scene on the ramparts is BY FAR the most sensual thing I've ever seen on film. My favorite part is when they part from the first kiss and she looks down at him like "Oh my God you are just the finest thing in the history of the world where did you come from..." and then they continue... BUT there are other scenes too... 2. The scene at the burial ground where Hawkeye talks to her about the stars and the folktales about the stars and his family history. 3. Scene behind the waterfall, "I will find you, etc." you all know the rest. 4. The sequence where Uncas and Nathaniel are firing to protect the courier... 5. And Magua's beckoning toward Alice on the rocks. His face said more than any words could have spoken. I, personally, would have gone with him, but then I'm not an invalid schoolgirl This movie is SO full of scenes though it's almost impossible to describe. I've seen it at least 45 times now and I've never grown tired of it. Now if I just had somebody on the ramparts waiting for me... Christina |

Posted - May 02 2003 : 1:06:53 PM Of course, my favorite scene is Magua, standing on the cliff, beckoning Alice not to jump. My second, thrids, fourth etc. fav scenes are anyones with Magua in them. To be fair, since I also run Russell's fan club, any scenes with Russell in them are perfect too. Oh heck, I just love the whole thing! Ros |

Posted - May 02 2003 : 01:56:32 AM I've read those interviews but I'm not satisfied with this answers. I mean some of my favourite moments were:
- "serious disagreement" line - "breed apart and make no sense" line - "sure as hell ain't your scort" line
I had heaps of favourite moments admittedly but it's quite shocking to see those bits removed. Also, I didn't see / hear anything wrong with the Clannad song at all! I thought it was quite haunting although it still works without the Clannad song too.
At least they didn't cut "The Kiss". *swoon* :D |

Posted - May 01 2003 : 7:55:53 PM I think that a lot of it was Mann's desire to re-create a more prototypical Hawkeye - rather than a "pop" star. On The Expanded Edition Page there's some input from Mann, and - if memory serves correctly - a link to another interview. In one, or both, he gives his reasons for some of it. Not saying I buy it all, but ... |

Posted - April 21 2003 : 5:40:03 PM ok I have two scenes that get me everytime. the first being under the falls when Uncas grabs Alice and holds her as he runs his hand through her hair(drool everythime!)...the second is the burial ground when Uncas covers Alice's mouth and it almost looks like he is using his body to cover hers....and I lied...a third one is when Chingachgook is running after up the cliff at the end and is crying(looks like crying to me) and Hawkeye calling out Uncas' name. Hmmm can you tell I am in love with Eric Schweig?! LOL |

Posted - April 08 2003 : 07:19:15 AM In a movie filled with great action scenes, love scenes, scene scenes ... it really is difficult to isolate just one as the very best.
I mean, from the very beginning ... the beating of the drum in darkness ... the film grabs you. Through one spectacular scene after another, it never really lets you go. The Last of the Mohicans, as a piece of art, is as beautiful a visual as you are likely to find.
But, here's my criteria for singling out the very best of the very best ... Someone - anyone - is walking through a room where LOTM is being watched on a TV screen. What scene is most likely to make this anonymous person stop in their tracks and get sucked in, unable to break the spell & move on?
From the moment Duncan cries out, "My compliments, Sir! Take her & get out!" to the pounding of a lifeless Magua's head upon the rocks about 10 minutes later, we witness perhaps the best bit of film-making ... ever! The magnificent scenery, combined with equally magnificent musical score ... WOW! No words spoken, yet a dramatic & climactic tale is eloquently expressed! There are great close-up shots of beautiful people, action sequences, panoramic vistas of pristine landscape ... It's all there. No one can walk away from it. It is almost hypnotic in its spell. Spellbinding!
The very best of the very best ...
And, you know what? The two main stars of the film, Daniel Day-Lewis & Madeleine Stowe, play only minor roles in the sequence ... this is a film-making coup! Bravo Michael Mann, Dante Spinotti, et al! |

Posted - April 06 2003 : 10:00:57 AM My favorite is definitely the love scene. From the moment Hawkeye claims Cora and they walk off together until the final moment of rapture, it is breathtaking.
I also enjoyed the scene where Hawkeye and everyone flees in the canoes after the massacre. I really came to appreciate the beauty of these canoes and thought it was a real tribute to Native America. |

Posted - April 06 2003 : 12:46:42 AM My favourite scene has to be the one from the Huron encampment and Heyward's sacrifice, all the way to the credits... The battle between Uncas and Magua is breathtaking, especially with the powerful music in the background. It hurts to see the pain in Alice's eyes after she has seen the man she loves/her rescuer slashed and wounded, then ultimately killed. |
