Posted - September 09 2003 : 8:12:33 PM Historically speaking, one of my favorite real life "characters" is Bougainville. First, I find his journals from 1756-1760 fascinating ("Adventures in the Wilderness"). It is really enlightening to see how he starts our rather naive and becomes more and more informed and cynical as each year passes. He has some interesting comments on the Indians, in particular: "They [Delewares and Shawnees] have eaten an English officer whose pallor and plumpness tempted them." And second, I find it interesting that after the F&I War, Bougainville became one of France's most famous and successful explorers, and we are indebted to him for the beautiful bougainville plant.
For those who have not read his journals, I encourage you to do so!

I might add, too, that many of the fictional characters were based on conglomerations of real-life characters ... Hawkeye, Duncan, et al. Peruse our Mohican Musings ... |
