Posted - July 02 2004 : 08:14:27 AM Okay, I think that we would have a mutiny on our hands if we didn't have Chimney Rock, The Movie, and Mohican Games for the 2006 Gathering. So that we can get a better idea of the other events that everybody likes, please vote for your favorite event. I know that it is hard to pick just one, but we need to know the most popular events!!! |

Posted - November 06 2005 : 12:02:28 AM My vote is for the waterfalls at Dupont forest. Looking forward to June.
I will probably take a week off from work to attend the gathering. When not at the gathering I will likely set up base camp in Gaitlinburg TN and make day trips to Cherokee Reservation and Smokey Mountain National Park. All are welcome to join me.

I think that maybe because it is a pricey excursion. I will say though, that if you have never been to the Biltmore Estate I would HIGHLY recommend going at least once! It is wonderful. |

Posted - October 03 2005 : 11:20:35 AM I REALLY love Chimney Rock! And probably will be coming since I can see again --retinal stuff with other things all cleared--can't wait to see everything and everyone again!!! Thanks for all your work on this. Joan |

Posted - October 02 2005 : 10:29:56 PM I missed going to Table Rock last year and would really like to go next year, even though that wasn't the event that I voted for. Can we maybe schedule something for the same day as Nolichucky for those of us that aren't terribly fond of water? I know that alot of the group would really like to go rafting again, so I am sure that will be one of the events, but maybe there is something that can coincide with Nolichucky for us landlubbers.

Posted - October 02 2005 : 7:28:22 PM I couldn't stay for the entire Gathering, but I loved hiking up to where Alice jumped and to the place where the movie ended. |

Posted - October 02 2005 : 08:50:31 AM Resurrection of this thread! Please vote for your favorite event and comment about any others that you would like. Gathering plans are underway and we need to know what YOU want. This year looks like it will be a shorter Gathering, so we can't do everything, so make your choices known!!!! Stephanie |

Posted - June 01 2005 : 1:32:04 PM I figured that maybe we could get some more input as to what is everybody's favorite event. These polls can really help out whoever is going to head up the 2006 Gathering!!!

Posted - July 11 2004 : 11:14:12 PM I voted for my favorite activities (not an easy choice--everything was great!). But I also wanted to address some of the "activities" that weren't listed----the Guest Speakers that we had. I really enjoyed these speakers--at Cherokee, Spirits, and the movie, even though their time was limited. And it was a shame that the Ft. William-Henry speaker couldn't attend.
A 4-day Gathering is a tight schedule, but I hope that we would be able to do a dinner-speaker type of event.

Posted - July 11 2004 : 6:26:32 PM Well, actually, that cabin sleeps six. It accommodates that many without too many problems. Anymore and it MIGHT be a little crowded. Howsever, it has an enclosed Verandah where a few more folks could camp out, was there a need.
There's another cabin nearby that sleeps 4. However, there's room inside for another two people, if it was necessary. It has a verandah but it's open and *I* personally wouldn't be keen to sleep there, though I dare say, in good weather, it might actually be okay.
The cabins are basic, and not what I'd describe as the CLEANEST accommodation I've ever slept in. However, the beds and appliances were spotless and the beds comfortable. Both cabins are self-catering, with cookers and fridges...
They ARE 150 years old though... (actually, I believe the smaller one is much newer than that) and LOG CABINS,... they aren't Lake Lure Inn...
BUT WE HAD A GREAT TIME last year (had a FABULOUS time the year before too!) and the way we look at it is, it's just somewhere to lay yer head at night. Yer out doing things through the day...
October is PERFECT there - colour without the boiling hot sun, and soaring temperatures... |

Posted - July 11 2004 : 5:32:47 PM I didn't think that it was from this year because I couldn't think of where y'all might have gone to see the llama. He is awfully cute!!! I think that N.C. in October is going to be wonderful!!! I definitely want to be there. That cabin looks kind of small. Do they have more cabins nearby? Hopefully a haunted one, because a friend of mine that wants to be there will find the spirit if it is there.

Posted - July 11 2004 : 5:20:52 PM Hehehehee... these pics were taken last October when Christina, Diana, myself and a one time poster here, Marcia, were having our Autumn trek in Chimney Rock. If I recall right, this is was at 'Grandad's Apple Barn' (?) just up the road a piece from Bat Cave.
They had the most WONDERFUL apples and - PUMPKINS!!! A BIIIIIG YARD OF PUMPKINS!!!! As well as our smoochie friend here and his two buds, a Mama and baby goat, who were lying in the shed, not botherin' with visitors that day. HOWSEVER, this l'll llama just COULDN'T GET ENOUGH lovin'!! Honestly, he was just SOOOOO sweet, and soooo crazy for being petted!!!

This is the cabin that we stay in. It's nearly 150 years old and - has a ghost! When the kitchen extension was being added, a body was found under what was to be the kitchen floor. And it's said that the spirit of the lady buried under the floor, haunts the cabin. Well... you can believe what ye like but one night when we had a campfire, there were more folks sitting and milling around, than actually signed up for ROTBAT!

Yep, autumn in Chimney Rock is FABULOUS!

Posted - July 11 2004 : 12:00:48 AM I LOVE those pictures of Christina, Kate, and the llama. When were they taken? That is a great idea about the ones that want to make it a week long Gathering to come a few days ahead. I would love to see more sites too. I fell in love with North Carolina. Hmmmm, I wonder if I can convince the hubby to move.

Posted - July 09 2004 : 7:10:16 PM That llama was just THE SWEETEST THING!!! All he wanted to do was nuzzle, cuddle and kiss!! Christina, Diana, Marcia and I spent AGES with him - and he never got cross or upset once. And never spat AT ALL! He was just the most LOVABLE creature!! |

Posted - July 09 2004 : 4:09:04 PM The REALLY sad thing is that the llama was the nicest single guy I've managed to meet in the past 12 months...

Posted - July 09 2004 : 12:30:51 PM Oh, those are so cute!! That is one friendly llama! You ladies were very lucky, however. My daughter was talking to one at our local zoo years ago and she got a face full of llama spit.
I do have one question, though... How does that farmer use his tractor?!?!?!

Posted - July 09 2004 : 09:56:46 AM Here goes Diana...tossing another idea out!
I go to A LOT of meetings throughout the year and most of the really big meetings offer a preconvention course. How about having an official 4-5 day gathering and then have some of the more "not everyones favorite, but liked by a significant contingent" events 2 or 3 days prior to THE MAIN EVENT? That way those of us that LOVE the Nolichucky, like a week-long gathering due to the drive, or want some down days...can have our cake and eat it too.
Another thought I had (run for the hills - Diana is thinking!) was, those that love NC, but only get to see LOTM sites might like a day visiting OTHER popular and noteworthy sites in Western NC. There are lots more falls and mountain hikes we never even visit. See Whitewater Falls below - 411 ft. A couple more than Hickory Nut Falls and much more water involved.

Posted - July 08 2004 : 11:53:07 PM I personally liked the layout for this years Gathering as a whole week long. I agree with Donna, spreading the events out thru a week makes the long trip down to Mohicanland more worth the while. But either way, no matter what occurs, I WILL FIND Y... I mean, I'll be there.

Posted - July 08 2004 : 11:51:44 PM Hey Jayne!
I'm so "happy" you let me ride with you! It was great to get to know you, Don, and Karen better. It was so much fun.... I haven't laughed that hard in years!
You and Don make a great team. Your navigating and his driving. It really helped me rest up, and saved me from getting lost myself. (Though I've been pretty lucky so far.)
Rafting with you three, and Vincent, and Debbie, was a blast. Let's not forget John Harkins either. He had to go swimming or be left alone on that rock! That was some stunt Keith pulled. Yeah, the raft will fit....... right.........
I think even though Karen went through some very stressfull moments, I bet she'd sign up again. I remember her smiling quite a bit.

Posted - July 08 2004 : 11:39:58 AM I agree with Kate. Those 4 day gatherings were always so much to in a short period of time. A real work-out that wiped out some folks so much they couldn't attend all the events. This year was my dream come true. A week together and most of us staying in the same motel. Stretching the tough days through the week really helped me, so I was able to rest up, and go to everything.
I would love another week together but with less events planned. Then we could relax more and socialize. I didn't even get a chance to walk around the stores in Chimney Rock. I wasn't going to miss any of our group activities. So, my wish list for activities remains the same, spreading them out to a week would make my trip down even more worth the while. I did like the horse back riding a few years back too, despite the rain.

Posted - July 08 2004 : 04:36:52 AM I would have to agree with Kate, I thought we were always on the go. I think I only had time to visit the Gathering Room once during the whole week. For me, the trek to Table Rock is my favorite, it is kinda of a spiritual place. I can personally do without the Falls hike trek, because I missed it for the 2nd consective gathering in a row. I wanted to visit some other places that I thought might be interesting. I did the hike to the Bat Cave during the 2002 Gathering during the time that everyone else did the Falls trek. Although, the Bat Cave hike was pretty hard even for only a half-mile trek back and forth. |

Posted - July 07 2004 : 8:56:14 PM Consider this a humble plea to leave river rafting in the mix. I'd never done it before, was terrified beforehand, but within 15 minutes in the boat was having the time of my life -- late afternoon downpours notwithstanding. If it came down to either having Nolichucky or Mohican Games, I'd take the Nolichucky. I enjoyed all the events this year, of course, but this new experience was right up there near the top for me! Again, my humble three cents. You may take it or leave it.

Posted - July 07 2004 : 3:52:31 PM I'm afraid I'm one of the 'can't decide' brigade too! I LOVED THEM ALL!!!
To be honest, that was one of the things that OFTEN came up during the previous Gatherings... so much to do, so little time to do it ALL!! Hence, suggestions were OFTEN put in to extend the Gathering to a week, so that we could do one or two of them in a day, rather than the THREE we were doing in 3-4 days, to get them all in. We were on the go the whole time, and had little time to 'socialise' and get to know one another...
Eventually, the Gathering stretched to a week (this PAST one!) and STILL I felt it was a 'go, go, GO' Gathering, with NO time to 'stand and stare'. A couple of us elected to leave the final part of the walk through Dupont, to take an hour to go do some badly needed shopping (of souvenirs for family left behind!). And though this was an case of 'early mornings, late nights', I DIDN'T WANT TO MISS A THING!! And in spite of health issues, I was determined to do - AND I DID DO - everything!!
However, apart from the first evening we got in, I never got ONE MINUTE to go down to the Gathering room and buy tickets for Ariel's Auctions OR the Raffle!! I had to quickly get them on the day of the Games. Which wasn't TOO big a problem but... arriving later (having a teeesy navigation problem), a Raffle had already been drawn and so...
My feelings are that I think a week is a GOOD length of Gathering... but dropping a couple of things to have a little 'downtime' would be beneficial. It would give everyone more time to 'shop' in the Gathering room, buy tickets and have time to 'talk'... 'talking' to the various MohicanBoard members is a great deal of the fun of Gathering.
Having a week also helps justify the cost of expensive flight tickets, for those that have to fly long distances to get to the Gathering... I'm terribly lucky in that I can combine the Gathering with visiting with friends who invite me to stay with them for a few days and so... I can justify the cost of $800. for a flight ticket. But... not everyone who flies, does that. I just mention this for those who live far away but want to attend. But may be feeling they can't justify that kind of money for just 3 or 4 days...
I heard a LOT of people say that they were glad the Gathering had been extended to a week, but... they thought perhaps a couple of afternoons could be left free for 'recharging their batteries' and doing things other than LOTM activities...
Just thought I'd throw my thoughts into the ring...
But I'm sorry - I just CAN'T DECIDE what my 'favourite' activity is... though Table Rock IS definitely on my list!!! And... I loved the Pony Trekking... and I loved the White Water Rafting... and I'd love to do that new trail up by the location of 'The Elk Hunt/Tracking the War Party'...
It's all soooo difficult... *sigh*... |
