Poll Question:
Okay, I think that we would have a mutiny on our hands if we didn't have Chimney Rock, The Movie, and Mohican Games for the 2006 Gathering. So that we can get a better idea of the other events that everybody likes, please vote for your favorite event. I know that it is hard to pick just one, but we need to know the most popular events!!!

I didn't receive your email, but you are very welcome!!! Sometimes I have a problem with personal emails going into my bulk folder, and if I am in a hurry, then i just go ahead and delete the bulk folder without looking at it because it is usually just junk. I will have to start taking time to look through it and see if there are any personal emails in it.

Chimney Rock is a given. I wasn't really supposed to include it in the first poll that I sent out. I mean, what would a Gathering be without having aching thighs and calves.  I really did enjoy Chimney Rock even if I was achey all over. And I really enjoyed the ice cream at the end of our journey!!!

Yep, it was. So was the ice cream that I had when I went shopping the next day with a couple of the girls, and the milkshake that Kim bought for me that day after that was also guilt-free. Hmmmm, now I wonder why my scales weighed me a little heavier when I came home.

I don't want to screw up the poll, but this just occurred to me: There may be newbies like me (darn! still a newbie as far as the GAthering is concerned) who will want to see as many movie sites as possible, while others who've been to several Gatherings would groan at the thought of doing, say, Dupont Forest again. So, could there be two activities scheduled for one day, with Gatherers attending whichever they preferred? |

This is the place for suggestions, and although it wasn't mentioned on the board, it has been suggested having two different events going on the same day, so that is definitely worth thinking about. We have alot of time, but even though it is two years away, we need to get as many ideas as possible, so that later on, everything can be planned to suit most of the Gatherers. So, you may be able to see all of those sites yet.

I just made a mistake and voted on the first topic instead of the revised topic.... ooooooh well. I guess I'd have to say my favorite event on the new list would have to be Table Rock. Standing on top of the world looking down is a sensation I wouldn't want to miss!

I find it very hard to vote for one event as I love them all.
I did vote for Table Rock/Linville Falls as that's one of my favorite
hikes. Table rock is not that hard, lots of level ground, but fun going through the rocks.
If the next gathering is indeed only 4 days, this would be my wish list.
One day for Table Rock and Linville Falls. Getting together at Louise's
is always fun and the food is good.
Another day River Rafting. This year was more fun than last time
because there was so much water. The rain was a drag but I still
loved it. Really gets the adrenaline pumping.
Another day at Dupont Forest (Waterfalls) It's a lot to hike, but so
beautiful. See the movie that night also.
Another day at Chimney Rock Park in the morning and The Mohican Games
in the afternoon. We could do our own light breakfast and hopefully
meet at the pavilion. Then all hike up together in the morning before
it gets too hot. Then grab lunch on the way to the Mohican games.
Another pig roast would be wonderful. It's a great time for everyone to get together and visit.
It was so hard to leave before it was over this year.
But you know, whatever is planned for the next one, I'll be there.

Nathan, I'm with you. Table Rock is one of the highlights for me, too. I like Donna's plan. But maybe Dupont without the slip-sliding mud hike and soaking downpour we had this year?? I have to admit it was great fun, even soaking wet!

I'm afraid I'm one of the 'can't decide' brigade too! I LOVED THEM ALL!!!
To be honest, that was one of the things that OFTEN came up during the previous Gatherings... so much to do, so little time to do it ALL!! Hence, suggestions were OFTEN put in to extend the Gathering to a week, so that we could do one or two of them in a day, rather than the THREE we were doing in 3-4 days, to get them all in. We were on the go the whole time, and had little time to 'socialise' and get to know one another...
Eventually, the Gathering stretched to a week (this PAST one!) and STILL I felt it was a 'go, go, GO' Gathering, with NO time to 'stand and stare'. A couple of us elected to leave the final part of the walk through Dupont, to take an hour to go do some badly needed shopping (of souvenirs for family left behind!). And though this was an case of 'early mornings, late nights', I DIDN'T WANT TO MISS A THING!! And in spite of health issues, I was determined to do - AND I DID DO - everything!!
However, apart from the first evening we got in, I never got ONE MINUTE to go down to the Gathering room and buy tickets for Ariel's Auctions OR the Raffle!! I had to quickly get them on the day of the Games. Which wasn't TOO big a problem but... arriving later (having a teeesy navigation problem), a Raffle had already been drawn and so...
My feelings are that I think a week is a GOOD length of Gathering... but dropping a couple of things to have a little 'downtime' would be beneficial. It would give everyone more time to 'shop' in the Gathering room, buy tickets and have time to 'talk'... 'talking' to the various MohicanBoard members is a great deal of the fun of Gathering.
Having a week also helps justify the cost of expensive flight tickets, for those that have to fly long distances to get to the Gathering... I'm terribly lucky in that I can combine the Gathering with visiting with friends who invite me to stay with them for a few days and so... I can justify the cost of $800. for a flight ticket. But... not everyone who flies, does that. I just mention this for those who live far away but want to attend. But may be feeling they can't justify that kind of money for just 3 or 4 days...
I heard a LOT of people say that they were glad the Gathering had been extended to a week, but... they thought perhaps a couple of afternoons could be left free for 'recharging their batteries' and doing things other than LOTM activities...
Just thought I'd throw my thoughts into the ring...
But I'm sorry - I just CAN'T DECIDE what my 'favourite' activity is... though Table Rock IS definitely on my list!!! And... I loved the Pony Trekking... and I loved the White Water Rafting... and I'd love to do that new trail up by the location of 'The Elk Hunt/Tracking the War Party'...

Consider this a humble plea to leave river rafting in the mix. I'd never done it before, was terrified beforehand, but within 15 minutes in the boat was having the time of my life -- late afternoon downpours notwithstanding. If it came down to either having Nolichucky or Mohican Games, I'd take the Nolichucky. I enjoyed all the events this year, of course, but this new experience was right up there near the top for me!
Again, my humble three cents. You may take it or leave it.

| I would have to agree with Kate, I thought we were always on the go. I think I only had time to visit the Gathering Room once during the whole week. For me, the trek to Table Rock is my favorite, it is kinda of a spiritual place. I can personally do without the Falls hike trek, because I missed it for the 2nd consective gathering in a row. I wanted to visit some other places that I thought might be interesting. I did the hike to the Bat Cave during the 2002 Gathering during the time that everyone else did the Falls trek. Although, the Bat Cave hike was pretty hard even for only a half-mile trek back and forth. |

I agree with Kate. Those 4 day gatherings were always so much to in a
short period of time. A real work-out that wiped out some folks so much
they couldn't attend all the events.
This year was my dream come true. A week together and most of us
staying in the same motel. Stretching the tough days through the week
really helped me, so I was able to rest up, and go to everything.
I would love another week together but with less events planned. Then
we could relax more and socialize. I didn't even get a chance to walk
around the stores in Chimney Rock. I wasn't going to miss any of our
group activities.
So, my wish list for activities remains the same, spreading them out
to a week would make my trip down even more worth the while. I did
like the horse back riding a few years back too, despite the rain.

I'm so "happy" you let me ride with you! 
It was great to get to know you, Don, and Karen better.
It was so much fun.... I haven't laughed that hard in years!
You and Don make a great team. Your navigating and his driving.
It really helped me rest up, and saved me from getting lost
myself. (Though I've been pretty lucky so far.)
Rafting with you three, and Vincent, and Debbie, was a blast.
Let's not forget John Harkins either. He had to go swimming
or be left alone on that rock! That was some stunt Keith
pulled. Yeah, the raft will fit....... right.........
I think even though Karen went through some very stressfull moments,
I bet she'd sign up again. I remember her smiling quite a bit.

I personally liked the layout for this years Gathering as a whole week long. I agree with Donna, spreading the events out thru a week makes the long trip down to Mohicanland more worth the while. But either way, no matter what occurs, I WILL FIND Y... I mean, I'll be there.

Here goes Diana...tossing another idea out!
I go to A LOT of meetings throughout the year and most of the really big meetings offer a preconvention course. How about having an official 4-5 day gathering and then have some of the more "not everyones favorite, but liked by a significant contingent" events 2 or 3 days prior to THE MAIN EVENT? That way those of us that LOVE the Nolichucky, like a week-long gathering due to the drive, or want some down days...can have our cake and eat it too.
Another thought I had (run for the hills - Diana is thinking!) was, those that love NC, but only get to see LOTM sites might like a day visiting OTHER popular and noteworthy sites in Western NC. There are lots more falls and mountain hikes we never even visit. See Whitewater Falls below - 411 ft. A couple more than Hickory Nut Falls and much more water involved.

Oh, those are so cute!! That is one friendly llama! You ladies were very lucky, however. My daughter was talking to one at our local zoo years ago and she got a face full of llama spit.
I do have one question, though... How does that farmer use his tractor?!?!?!
