The "Coyote Waits" thread in the "Inside the Longhouse" forum (Rich, how to cross-reference something elsewhere on the board?) includes a discussion of mysteries set in Indian country, including those of Tony Hillerman (the master), Aimee and David Thurlo, and Margaret Coel. In case any avid readers missed that thread, I thought I'd start a new one here, since I've just discovered another such series: the novels featuring sometime sheriff Cork O'Connor, by William Kent Krueger. The setting is northern Minnesota, home of the Anishinaabe Ojibwe (they sensibly condense that to "the Shinnob"). I've read the first and third in the series, "Iron Lake" and "Purgatory Ridge"; the second is "Boundary Waters." The sheriff is part Ojibwe, and both of the books I've read address Ojibwe life and the tensions between them and their white neighbors. When I started reading each of these books I didn't think the plot was all that special, then -- that development that every mystery reader hopes for! -- they quickly became page turners. I recommend them highly.

for more anishnaabe reading, jim northrup, who writes fond du lac follies has a couple good books out... he writes about modern rez life, jumping between the silly and dead serious... lots of good humor here {his powow frybread concession is called "stand here" }... more on the website http://www.jimnorthrup.org
the links to the fond du lac follies collum seem broken, but can be found around...

Thanks, Sachem! I think I can do that.

<---- Look for that icon above the posting test field. That will bring up a list of posts [you can set a time frame - obviously, the longer you choose, the longer the list takes to load. This setting will be remembered by your computer for the next time.]; then simply click on the link and it will appear in your post ... like this: Coyote Waits.

Or, you can open multiple browser windows & cut & paste the URL. I like using the posting button better. If your connection is fast it won't take long to load, even if you choose the posts from the past year option.
