I am wondering if any of you watched the PBS Hillerman movie "Coyote Waits'? To my knowledge CW and Skinwalkers have been on all week through . I enjoyed CW tremendously although the director changed a few things around. Obviously Inspector Leaphorn, portrayed by Wes Studi is much younger and also went through a character change..Any opinions on that? I must say that I was rather impressed by Adam Beach's performance as Jim Chee..I am looking forward to the third movie in January..

Well hello, Bea! Nice to see you again. You've been awfully quiet lately.

Yes, I watched CW, and enjoyed it very much. I really think both Wes Studi and Adam Beach are great in these roles. But, why do I keep expecting Wes to say, "Joe Leaphorn understand English... very well."

I also liked Sheila Tousey as Leaphorn's wife. She compliments him well. I am looking forard to see THIEF OF TIME.

I am an avid Hillerman reader and also enjoy books by Aimee and David Thurlo. The latter one is Navajo. Both authors are tremendously successful with their portrayal of Navajo. I had a Navajo friend here in Alberta ( she has since moved back) and she loved the books.

Truth be told I also love the state of Arizona.. One day i hope to be back..God willing..
Yes, I haven't been around lately due to soccer injuries and other nasty little bugs. I am just getting over the flu..But- I promise to post more in this forum..BTW make sure to watch the Hallmark series DREAMKEEPER. It was filmed in the Calgary area and has many of our favourite actors starrng. Europe and Australia have been lucky enough to watch but we won't be able to until the end of December..

HEY BEA!!!

I was in ARIZONA the night CW aired, but was so exhausted from traveling and meetings that I couldn't keep my eyes open. Then I caught another part that I had missed this past week. I have YET to see the whole thing through. I agree with you about Sheila Tousey - she captures the character perfectly I think! I have only read The Blessing Way (trying to read them in order on your recommendation) and enjoy the characters so much. Adam Beach has really grown into a man hasn't he? This is a series I think I'd like to own...I know they are available on DVD, and will probably get them. It would be nice if they offer the series as a box set in the future!

Lucky you!! I wish I could have been there too!! In the meantime I have to contend with subarctic temps..Brrrr..

Yes, Adam has definitely turned into a man.His acting has matured as well. I am quite impressed.

Skinwalkers was on again yesterday and I was glued to the TV..But my twelve year old son considered it boring ( the nerve!!!) and wanted to watch cartoons instead..Arrgh..Yes, a boxed gift set would be nice..
I sure hope though that all of Tony's books will be turned into movies. They are worth it.They're no fluff and are an execellent tool to get to know about the Navajos and Hopis. I'd love to see someone portray the Hopi cop Cowboy Daschee. I think Gary Farmer would be great!! I got into Hillerman when I found the DARK WIND in half-price bin at Safeway. I became hooked right away..I'll check the order they were written in and get back at you!!

Okay, here is the order as promised:

Dance Hall of the Dead
Listening Woman
People of the Darkness
The Dark Wind
The Ghostway
Skinwalkers
A Thief of Time
Talking God
Coyote Waits
Sacred Clowns

I think there may be one or two more but I'll have to check on that.. Figured this should keep you busy for a while.

Also, time permitting, perhaps over the holidays, take a look the Thurlos' Ella Clah mysteries.. A female Jim Chee although she is not a hatalii. Her brother is..:)

Enjoy!!!

Thanks Bea!

The best I could tell from the copyright date (and some place on the web I went) was that The Blessing Way was the first - do you know that one? I believe it was just Leaphorn, before Chee was introduced.

Just did a search of Tony Hillerman books and the listt below looks like the chronological order of them from most recent to first written, listing awards also. Bea, do you know which one Jim Chee first appears in? Now, this list is all of TH's books, from the descriptions it looks like Chee might have been introduced in Skinwalkers?

The Wailing Wind. New York: Harper, 2002.

Hunting Badger. New York: Harper,1999.

The First Eagle. New York: Harper,1998.

The Fallen Man . New York: Harper,1997.

Sacred Clowns. New York: Harper,1993.

Coyote Waits. New York: Harper,1990.

Talking God. New York: Harper,1989.

A Thief of Time. New York: Harper,1988.
This book won the Macavity award in 1989.

Skinwalkers. New York: Harper,1986.
Reprinted 1987.
Bestseller List, 1986.
This book won the Western Writers of America Spur Award and the Anthony Award.

The Ghost Way. New York: Harper, 1984.
Reprinted 1986.

The Dark Wind. New York: Harper, 1982.
Reprinted 1983.

People of the Darkness. New York: Harper, 1980.
Reprinted 1982.

Listening Woman,New York: Harper, 1978.
Reprinted 1979.

Dance Hall of the Dead. New York: Harper, 1973.
Reprinted in 1975.
MWA Edgar Allen Poe Award for the Best Mystery Novel of the West, 1973.

The Blessing Way. New York: Harper, 1970.
Reprinted in 1978.
This book was a finalist for the Best First Novel Edgar Allen Poe Award.

On Amazon, it looked like Dance Hall of the Dead and Wailing Wind might be difficult to get in paperback. I've only read the first one, but can attest to how Hillerman's writing draws you in with information about Navajo life while being in the throws of a great mystery

Great research, Diana! I have read all of them but I don't quite remember where Jim Chee shows up.As mentioned before I started with the Dark Wind and that's when I first 'met' Jim. That would be before Skinwalkers. Liked him right away..In the later books Leaphorn and Chee were reunited..:)Poor Emma is eventually claimed by cancer.

You should read all of the books. They are excellent, of course some books are stronger than others. But wait 'til you meet Cowboy Dashee, the Hopi cop. What a character!! Not only that but it also gives you a great peek into the Hopi culture and the ongoing tensions between the two nations..I remember finding it rather strange to find another reserve within a reserve..Hopis are not very open to Caucasians witnessing their culture and ceremonies. I suppose it dates back to the time when they had to hide the above mentioned from the Spaniards..

You're sure??? Maybe you're getting those spam e-mails about that certain patch..hehe..Sooner or later it creeps up on ya!!!

Yep, the Ella Clah novels are awesome..I'll get the newest.Oh, and then there is Margaret Coel with her sleuthing Catholic priest on the Arapaho reserve..hmm.. time to check if she has a novel out. I think they may have turned one of her novels into a movie..

I just noticed that I had a whole bunch of typos..eek..well, it's the cold weather..
