Posted - May 12 2009 : 12:53:06 PM I got to see the new Star Trek movie yesterday ... ooh yeah!
IMO, this is the best ST flick ever! Three little sylables will explain why: ***NO SHATNER***
Basically, it's 2:07 of action & FX, AND it's character driven! How cool is that?
Without giving away too much of the plot, which is somewhat complicated, let's just say that Kirk's a jerk (and this is different, how?) and Spock (new and old) save the day. Like I said, it's complicated... There are homages to several old Star Trek flicks and even a Star Wars-type scene!
Of the new characters, my favorite--Spock, very conflicted closest to the original--'Bones' McCoy, whadd'ya know, Pathfinder can act, after all!
I'll quickly mention two scenes only: 1)You've probably seen the trailer where they sky-dive from 20k toward that drilling platform. There was Kirk, Sulu, and some guy wearing a red shirt. Guess who dies immediately? (Like we couldn't see that coming?) 2)Kirk getting in Spock's face to set off his anger; it works all too well; Spock then beats the living sh*t out of Kirk. I loved it!
Lastly, my favorite line, "I am not OUR father!"
If you haven't seen it, please do so. If you have seen it, do so again! |

Posted - May 26 2009 : 12:30:32 PM What does being from Pittsburgh have to do with anything?
Oh yeah, I forgot yesterday to mention one thing--I think Eric Bana is a pretty good actor, but here, sadly, he's JACCV.
What's that, you ask? Just Another Cookie-Cutter Villain.
In all the years of the 11 Star Trek movies, there has only been one (1) great villain: Khan Noonien Singh. Ricardo Montalban simply stole that whole movie. That would be Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan, in case you don't know what I'm blithering about. |

As soon as my Granddaughter saw (the new) Spock, she said, "I recognize him! He's the villain on 'Heroes'!"
YAY!!!! He is the greatest villain and is perfect as Spock too! He is from Pittsburgh.

Karl Urban also played Eomer in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as the main character in Pathfinder.
Anton Yelchin's Ens. Chekov was very disappointing, to me, especially with that lame Polish accent...it certainly wasn't Russian!
Bruce Greenwood did Jeffrey Hunter proud as Christopher Pike...just excellent!
Did anyone notice that, when Spock & Kirk finally discovered Scotty, there was a Tribble nearby? I didn't.
Lastly, since when does Iowa have great gaping canyons? Did I miss the announcement? |

Posted - May 25 2009 : 8:10:58 PM What a great movie. It was casted perfectly. Chris Pine...James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto...Spock, are set for life.
A few of the actors looked familiar. Of course Capt. Pike, Bruce Greenwood was on John from Cincinnati last season on HBO as well as many other movies. I liked him in Double Jeopardy with Ashley Judd.
I didn't recognize Wynonna Ryder as Spocks mother until I read the cast list.
Karl Urban... Bones, looked so familiar and finally I realized he was the assassin in Bourne Supremacy.
John Cho...Sulu, plays Harold in the pot smoking duo Harold and Kumar. No drug testing in the Star Fleet Academy.
Simon Pegg...Scottie, played in Hott Fuzz that HBO played a million times.
Anton Yelchin...Chekov, played Bobbie Garfield in Hearts of Atlanta with Anthony Hopkins, and Along Came a Spider he played Dimitri. HBO played that one mucho as well. Good books too.
Chris Hemsworth, Capt. Kirk senior, made Dancing with the Stars Finals. I dunno if he won.
I remember Eric Bana...Nero, in Troy with Brad Pitt. He was Hector from Carthage. His specialty is getting killed obviously.

Posted - May 17 2009 : 5:21:26 PM Just saw the movie and I have to say it was brilliant. The opening sequence is quite sad and I had tears in my eyes, really moved me. I enjoyed every second of it. The "new guys" were amazing especially Spock and McCoy both of whom did the original characters justice. I will also add that this Spock was quite "cute" too and McCoy as well. Kirk was my least favorite character but he too did a great job. There is even some unexpected "romance" thrown in for two of the characters which made me smile and it was so sweet. Quite a few touching moments in the movie. Simon Pegg was quite good as "Scotty" and brought his humour with him. Quite a bit of humour throughout the movie with witty lines between the characters. If you were a fan of the original series then you should definitely like this movie. Money well spent is what I say. Go see it. Highly recommended.
I do hope this means more "Star Trek" movies with this excellent cast. I can hardly wait. |

Ugh! Don't even get me started on the new Star Wars trilogy! What a way to ruin a good thing! Nothing can compare to the original three story lines and the original cast- all the fancy shmancy CGI won't make the new ones compare 1/10th to the first! I totally agree with you Obi.

Not quite...according to Geekvolution, "the real reason Jeffry Hunter decided not to go on with the series was that his wife didnt take it seriously and thought it would destroy his career." Health-wise, he probably would not have made it through the whole series anyway--he had some major alcohol-related and other problems and passed away from a fall down the staircase at his home in 1969, at age 42. In actuallity, he preferred acting in Westerns...I refer you to The Searchers and Sergeant Rutledge, for example (these are great movies).

Yes, as a matter of fact! My wife and I both thought she was hilarious! Still do, as a matter of fact.
One thing still puzzles me though, even after all these years; what does "can't do a little 'cause he can't do enough" mean? |

Posted - May 14 2009 : 10:08:17 AM Kay I loved watching The Monkeesand Davy Jones was cute but for me I was head over heels in with Mickey Dolenz Imagine that. I too had a "thang" for Jack Wild but what young girl didn't
My older sister loved Mickey too and we would argue about who was cuter.
Going down "Memory Lane" sure is a lot of fun and to think it all started out with Obi's "Star Trek" post
Well, knowing this group as he does, and how we like to stray off topic, he had to know that it wouldn't stay on Star Trek for long.

Posted - May 14 2009 : 09:33:23 AM You can find drug connatations in alot of things if you really try. I look at Pufnstuf as a kid's program. If Sid and Marty Kroft ever meant for it to be something other than that, then as a child, I was unaware of it. As for "Puff the Magic Dragon", you will always have people that think the song was about drugs and others who think that it is about the loss of childhood. Peter Yarrow has always claimed that it was never about drugs, but there are people that will never be convinced about that. I prefer to think of childhood songs and shows as just that and not something associated with drugs.

Posted - May 14 2009 : 09:20:38 AM I've been able to watch the Monkees on RTN and I really like that show! That was one of my mom's must watch shows when she was my age. My favorite is Davy (he's not only cute but short like me). My mom's was Micky. Mom and Dad always talk about H.R. PufnStuf!

I still can't believe that Sid and Marty Krofft named a show with a drug connotation. They deny it but they did it as a joke. I remember Captain Kangaroo reading Puff the Magic Dragon too. What a trip.
As a young child I was completely in love with Penny Robinson from Lost in Space, real name Angela Cartwright.
The original Star Trek was the only show my family watched together. I saw Gene Roddenberry speak as a young kid. He made jokes about his wife (Nurse Chapel - Majel Barrett) having the hots for a Vulcan. They showed the pilot show, The Cage, and it freaked me out. I found out that Jeffrey Hunter got bumped out of a job by William Shatner. How much different it would have been had the Enterprise been commanded by Christopher Pike. They chopped the pilot up and turned it into a two part episode, The Menagerie. At least Jeffrey Hunter didn't have to suffer the indignity of playing the banged up Capt. Pike. That went to Sean Kenney. |

Posted - May 13 2009 : 11:08:26 PM IG, I didn't watch The Banana Splits too much. Guess there just wasn't a cute boy on there for me to be interested in it. but I do remember the theme song, or at least some of it. La la la... la la la la...la la la... la la la la One banana, two banana, three banana, four..... and that is all I remember. I will have to go to Youtube and try to refresh my memory. The shows that I watched usually had the teeny-bopper heart throbs in them..... Partridge Family (David Cassidy), Here Come the Brides (Bobby Sherman),The Monkees (Davy Jones), H. R. Pufnstuf (Jack Wild), Dark Shadows(No heart throb, but I never missed an episode) Gee, it's nice to go down memory lane.

I vaguely "Thunderbirds." I really liked "Herculoids", "H.R. Puffinstuff", and "Here Comes the Grump". |

Posted - May 13 2009 : 5:25:04 PM IG, I used to watch "Land of the Giants" too!!! I loved it. I have been going to youtube and laughing like crazy over some of these old shows.
Sus, I don't think that I could watch "Lost In Space" nowadays. Maybe a few episodes just to go down memory lane.
Obi, Can not compute!!! Can not compute!!!

Posted - May 13 2009 : 1:54:27 PM Space 1999 I used to watch that too on the telly Obi. Thanks for the memories. I did enjoy it.
Well I was a kid watching "Lost in Space" and thought it was great. I recall seeing some of it when I was adult and it seemed kind of lame, all done in a studio LOL.
Anyone recall another show I watched as a kid called "Land of the Giants"?
Loved watching "The Thunderbirds" as well. What childhood memories. |

Star Trek, huh? Ummmmmmm, I guess that I'm just not a trekkie. Never have been into it. In fact, I can remember many a fight over the t.v. when the old series was on because my older sister just had to watch it and I couldn't stand it. Interestingly enough, I loved Lost In Space. Yeah, you have to remember that I was just a kid.
Love, Kay
Lost in Space????? Man, that was a real dog! I watched the pilot & never ever looked at another episode. It was worse than Space 1999!
"Danger, Will Robinson!" Fortunately, Bill Mumy grew up & became a regular in the greatest scifi series of all time, Babylon 5...
BACK IN THE DAY...Star Trek was only my #2 favorite series then; my #1 (far surpassing ST) was Mission: Impossible. BTW, I hate those Tom Cruise junkers which have stolen a great name... |

Posted - May 13 2009 : 09:27:04 AM I hope to see the Star Trek movie this weekend and I was a big fan of the original growing up. I had such a "crush" on Capt. James T Kirk and Kaylynn I loved watching "Lost in Space" too. I also had a bigtime "crush" on the boy in the show That robot was something else and I agree about "Dr Smith" he was a nasty piece of work. "Never fear Smith is here"
