I believe your sons's prof didn't do her homework! LOTM was filmed in beautiful North Carolina. The lake is Lake James near Marion, NC and the falls are a composite of various places, one being Linville Falls. There are places on this web site that can tell you more about the specific places where scenes were filmed. I'll leave further explanations to the NC natives and experts (Rich, Elaine?)
