Filming the canoe scene

My son is a film and photo major at Ithaca College, NY. One of his profs showed footage from LOTM (Crucible, too, my son thinks the prof thinks DDL is hot!), and the in the scene of the canoes on the lake and going over the falls, she said it was filmed nearby in New York. Is this so and where at in NY. Pax Aye and thanks!
