Cora's pistol

Does anybody else find it odd that Miss Cora Munro knows how to load and fire a flintlock pistol? I was under the assumption that genteel women of that time would not pursue such violent adventures. Hawkeye simply hands her his powder horn, and she knows right what to do with it. I was also intrigued that she picked up the gun with no bullets to fit it. Firearms of that time were made individually, one at a time, and no two were the same caliber. Military arms were usually large-caliber smoothbores, whereas rifles were smaller caliber, usually .40-.50, so her woodsmen escorts would not have had the lead to fit her pistol.

Then again, she did say that she had "seen the face of war before."
