: Does anybody else find it odd that Miss Cora Munro knows how to load and fire a flintlock pistol? I was under the assumption that genteel women of that time would not pursue such violent adventures. Hawkeye simply hands her his powder horn, and she knows right what to do with it. I was also intrigued that she picked up the gun with no bullets to fit it. Firearms of that time were made individually, one at a time, and no two were the same caliber. Military arms were usually large-caliber smoothbores, whereas rifles were smaller caliber, usually .40-.50, so her woodsmen escorts would not have had the lead to fit her pistol.
: Then again, she did say that she had "seen the face of war before."

Parker,
Well, you have, to my knowledge, hit on a subject that has no real recall to prior posts (lucky me! no html to submit!) that I can recall. I can only think that, as I faintly remember in the book, that I got the impression that Cora had really been more active in the "Face of War" than the statement implied. I think I remember (hold in mind I read the book a bit ago) that it was implied she was with her dad on some/several/a few military campaigns....(hey, Gayle, where are you???) so I always figured she knew how to shoot a pistol; but the fact that the bullets were "custom made"....what a thought! (But typical of Hollywood to forget the small matters....)
Thanks for the info. Very interesting!
