: MMMMarcia,
: It does indeed sound like something is set up improperly with your system, but it is difficult to diagnose something like this without actually being there. A DVD will always sound better than a VHS tape if the player is hooked up properly to even a low-end surround sound system (like, a Dolby Pro-Logic receiver and 5 speakers); unless there was some major quality-control problem when the disk was authored. Wish I could be more help...

Thanks, Mike. Our tv/vcr/surround sound setup is quite complicated, and it's definitely possible that finding a way to hookup a rental machine *temporarily* is not the best way to do things. When we get our own player, Mark will take the time to set it up properly, and I'm sure that will make all the difference in the world...at least with the sound. When we played Titanic on the rental player, the sound was pretty "blah" too, so I'm sure it's either the player, the hookup, or both.
Maybe next month I'll have another chance to check out that sound...I'm hoping we can get our own player right after Christmas.
