: Thanks for the descriptions, Ben. As it happens, we have surround sound with speakers all over the place. I don't know a tweeter from a woofer (that's my husband's department) but I know when I'm in the middle of a battle, aurally, and when I play my THX, I am. The sound fairly zips around the room. It does not do that at all with my dvd, using the player we rented. Now whether that is because the player isn't adequate, or because it needs additional hookup somehow within our system, I don't know. I'm hoping to remedy that when we have our OWN player. But for now, the sound is NOT right. Normally, the floor shakes, the volleys from the mortars are coming from everywhere, and the waterfall rumbling sends my cat diving for cover. I'm looking forward to the proper fix on a good dvd player where that will be enhanced even further.

MMMMarcia,
It does indeed sound like something is set up improperly with your system, but it is difficult to diagnose something like this without actually being there. A DVD will always sound better than a VHS tape if the player is hooked up properly to even a low-end surround sound system (like, a Dolby Pro-Logic receiver and 5 speakers); unless there was some major quality-control problem when the disk was authored. Wish I could be more help...
