I was making my way slowly and quietly through the budding Spring forest today, my mind on the multitude of sounds, sights and smells which were bombarding me from every direction as the gentle breeze drifted and swayed among the trees. The sweet odor of blossoms of various kinds...dogwood, cherry, apple, larch, pine...the pungent odor of wet rotted oak and an occasional sour smell of deer picked up by a breeze and carried aloft from who knows where...all were captured as they passed me by. I heard an old Tom gobble in the distance, showing off, no doubt for his latest amour. I hunkered down in a windfall, took out my turkey call and began to play with him. "Pert! Pert!.....Pert, pert pert!" He answered with a long gobble, and I knew he would start seeking out this sweet young lady! I messed with him about half an hour until he decided he'd had enough of her playing hard to get and went about seeking an easier conquest.
I heard songbirds singing the songs given them by Sakweodiso, the Creator. How they got their songs is explained in the Iroquois story-lesson of the Hermit Thrush, you really should hear it sometime...As I listened to the various songs, I heard a song which was very familiar to me, but was not the usual bird song.
I listened hard and was able to make it out. It went like this:
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you!
Happy birthday CHAUNCEY GOODRICH!
Happy birthday to you!
Ah, yesssss...........today is the day.......April 17th.....your pal and mine came into this world. And while I have not known ol' Chaunce all those years, I am blessed in having no better friend.
So...to you, my dear, dear friend, I raise a glass of port, and a tankard of Ping and say, "Happy Birtday, mon ami, and may you have many, many many more!!!"
Pax AYE!!!
Your pal,
Seamus
