Ah...Diana and Theresa! Good to hear from you both, and thank you for the kind words.

You know, Diana, a crow call is just the ticket for locating turkeys. When I go into the woods and want to locate turkeys fast, I play a "tune" on a crow call and that sound will often stimulate a gobbler enough to gobble an answer. Then I set up and sweet talk him in. Many modern turkey hunters will drive along a road, stopping from time to time and sounding a crow call, will listen for an answer from old Tom. If none answers directly, they move on a mile or so and repeat it until they get a response. Then they park and go set up and call Tom in and turn him into groceries...or at east try to! There is nothing like taking old Tom with a flintlock!

NOW....if your beau can learn to mouth call crows and turkeys without using a manufactured call.....he will have something.

I use a turkey call made from the wing bone of a Wild Turkey with a small cow horn "funnel" as an amplifier, changing pitch and so forth by cupping my hand around the amplifier. I usually voice call crows, a skill I learned as a kid when we had two pet crows, but it is hard on the throat. My squirrel call is also made from a bone and horn amplifier. Then it is practice, practice, practice!

Pax aye!

: Oh Yes, I hope dear Sarah you had a wondrous birthday and, of course, that you have many many more!!!

: Seamus, I echo Theresa's sentiments. I was just telling Davey Gunn a day or so ago how I miss hearing from all you guys!!!!! And lo behold, hear ye be!!!!

: Just last evening, I too, was serenaded by my beau playing with the crows in his woods near his home. He had a crow caller (had NO idea they made such things) that he has had since he was a boy and shared about 10 different types of crow calls (had NO idea they had so many). All this via a cell phone (OH, the wonders of technology) - I'd love to say it was a pleasant experience, but...well...I threatened to drive the four hours between us and WALLOP his head if he did that in my ear again!!!

: Ahhh, the joys of love in the Spring!!!

: Stop by more often, Seamus --we miss your sweet self AND your prose!!!

: : OH! Happy Birthday, Sarah! Although we only met at last year's Gathering I consider you a dear friend. We hope you have a wonderful day and wish you many, many more.

: : Seamus,
: : I LOVE the way you write. We were watching a program on our local PBS channel Sunday and it was about the second highest mountain here in Alabama, Dugger Mountain. The Pinhoti Trail is the southern most beginning of the trail to the top of this mountain and it begins practically in our back door. Pinhoti is Creek for "Turkey Haunt". With inspiration from you, I think Claude and I may venture out and do a little hiking. Thanks!

: : : Whether she went by Chauncey, or English Trader, or plain old Sarah M., she's been around these parts for a long, long time ... and never has she been anything less than a good Bud! Hope you had a very Happy One, Sarah ...

: : : See link below ...

: : : : I was making my way slowly and quietly through the budding Spring forest today, my mind on the multitude of sounds, sights and smells which were bombarding me from every direction as the gentle breeze drifted and swayed among the trees. The sweet odor of blossoms of various kinds...dogwood, cherry, apple, larch, pine...the pungent odor of wet rotted oak and an occasional sour smell of deer picked up by a breeze and carried aloft from who knows where...all were captured as they passed me by. I heard an old Tom gobble in the distance, showing off, no doubt for his latest amour. I hunkered down in a windfall, took out my turkey call and began to play with him. "Pert! Pert!.....Pert, pert pert!" He answered with a long gobble, and I knew he would start seeking out this sweet young lady! I messed with him about half an hour until he decided he'd had enough of her playing hard to get and went about seeking an easier conquest.

: : : : I heard songbirds singing the songs given them by Sakweodiso, the Creator. How they got their songs is explained in the Iroquois story-lesson of the Hermit Thrush, you really should hear it sometime...As I listened to the various songs, I heard a song which was very familiar to me, but was not the usual bird song.

: : : : I listened hard and was able to make it out. It went like this:

: : : : Happy birthday to you,
: : : : Happy birthday to you!
: : : : Happy birthday CHAUNCEY GOODRICH!
: : : : Happy birthday to you!

: : : : Ah, yesssss...........today is the day.......April 17th.....your pal and mine came into this world. And while I have not known ol' Chaunce all those years, I am blessed in having no better friend.

: : : : So...to you, my dear, dear friend, I raise a glass of port, and a tankard of Ping and say, "Happy Birtday, mon ami, and may you have many, many many more!!!"

: : : : Pax AYE!!!

: : : : Your pal,

: : : : Seamus
