Love interest, Alice and Uncus?

Hi, I'm new to the site and a somewhat new fan of the movie. After seeing it 4 times (3 times original version and 1 time director's cut) it is still unclear to me whether the directors were trying to show a love interest between Uncus and Alice. Can anybody shed any light on this subject?
