Well, clearly, as Diane B. pointed out, the original intent, as per the script, was to portray a Uncas & Alice romance. Little room for doubt there. What becomes a bit muddier is, in the editing room, what was on Michael Mann's mind? What did he really want us to think and feel about them? So many have assumed a romance, to some degree, so the subliminal message MUST be there ... but I do wonder what the Director really had in mind.
