Greetings,
I can understand your concerns about the cold -- I get very cold very easily. But, I've learned to do what the Rangers do, which is to buddy-up and share blankets and body heat. I think my fellow Rangers had a more difficult time with that than I, for reasons I know you can figure out!
Actually, the cannibalism thing was real, but it wasn't necessarily Indians they ate, it was themselves. According to reports, they came upon dead white men whom they assumed were from their own party (I guess it was hard to tell who they were?) and, being starved, cooked and ate what they could.
If you follow the link below, you will come to a page which I am still working on, but on the right side is a link to read a contemporary report by an auther named Mante. I hope to have Rogers' own version up soon.
YHOS,
Pvt. Chauncey
: I'll take you up on your gracious offer, Pvt. Chauncey.
: It's been decades since I read Roberts' Northwest Passage. If the real trek was anything like his depiction, it's a miracle any of them made it back.
: Weeks of tromping through ice-encrusted swamps. Nothing to eat but some parched corn and the occasional Indian head. (Roberts had a bit of a fascination with cannibalism, didn't he?)
: My idea of hell.
: Did I mention I don't like the cold?
: I don't even like to think about that COHT thing Seamus is talking about. Gives me the shivers.
: You Rangers are some tough folks!

: : Greetings,
: : I will definitely get copies of tapes made for anyone who wants to. Chris, Rich, Theresa (?) - I've got your names at the head of the list. Seamus??
: :
: : I'll buy tapes here and you can just send me a check to cover tape and postage, once I send them out. Does that sound OK??
: : Anyone else?? Just let me know ahead of time so I know how many I will need to make, and send me your delivery address for being found by a courier or a scout in your neck of the woods.
