: Hi Rich,
: Your note and Nancy's follow-up about the board refining itself got me to thinking. I read the board at least twice a day when I'm home, and sometimes 3 times. I post occasionally. I guess I feel that the Mohicanland group is like family. (You have to understand, I'm from a huge family: my husband is one of 12, and I am one of 7, if you count step-sibs.) I'm always interested in hearing what everyone has to say, and I put in my 2 cents when I have something to contribute. However, I'm totally comfortable with the silence. Like you, if I want to hear from someone, I'll ask. Maybe what has happened is that we have all gotten to know each other well enough that we are comfortable talking, or listening, or just enjoying the companionship in silence.
: With 9 little ones (and bigger ones!) running around the house, perhaps you have forgotten how comfortable silence can be. When you get to be old like me, you'll appreciate it more!

Chris:
I have to say that your ideas also crossed my mind--about silence---that if you have something to say, you'll say it. Some people just enjoy listening and "being there". And some people are quiet and introspective, both in person and on-line. And not everyone can be quick and clever all the time, or have something to say. And there are probably many people who enjoy checking in on some of the banter, but for whatever reason, don't post. I know---because I've been like that.
But I guess from Rich's and others' standpoints, it can be discouraging to see the interactions die off, especially when so much effort and attention goes into keeping up the website.
And sometimes it seems like LOTM and related topics have been discussed & analyzed already, so is there anything left to talk about in line with the original intent of the board?
I don't know the answer. It will be interesting to see how the board continues to evolve. And just by virtue of the fact that certain folks are gone (but not forgotten!), it's a quieter place. But, I agree with you, Chris---that's not necessarily a bad thing (the quiet, that is, not the absent folks). Silence can mean a lot of different things--positive or negative---listening, thinking, introspection, absorbing or incubating ideas, changing ideas, preoccupation, lack of interest, etc. And it's winter--people might just be hibernating!
