: I am trying to sort this out. In the film Unca dies and Chingachgook is the "last of the Mohicans." In real life what happened? Didn't Unca become the creator of the tribe? Need help to understand this. I have checked "Betrayals" out of the library and starting to give it a read.
: Thanks,

Dear Lory,
In real life, none of them existed at all. Uncas and Chingachgook were imaginary characters in Cooper's books. However, in the chronology of the books, Uncas was descended from an original Uncas who appears in "The Wept of Wish-Ton-Wish". Our Uncas of LOTM, would have continued the Mohican line if he hadn't been killed in both the movie and the book. Since he was killed, the tribal line ended with his father, Chingachgook.
Just an interesting point of speculation from Cooper's book, "Last of The Mohicans": Cooper mentions that Wah-Tah-Wah, Uncas' mother, had borne several children. He doesn't elaborate on this, but I assume, since Chingachgook ends up the last of the line, that Uncas had all sisters and no brothers.
