Good point there in your previous post. The movie certainly does not point to any real romantic involvement - though we have heard discussed a part cut out of the movie which would have.
So given the movie as we see it, your premise of her seeing him as her savior and one thing to cling to in her fears seems logical. Funny, isn't it? She first is all excited and asking "have you seen the red man? What an advencha" and then later she is near mental collapse at what she HAS seen of him!
