: Getting naked is not a viable option. Do you know how many small buttons, laces, and clips there were on women's clothing? This was before the era of the zipper, remember. Trying to unbutton, unlace, and unclasp all of that, or even just to striping down to bloomers and a dickie would take a good ten minutes. (does anyone else find the thought of Jodhi May and Madeline Stowe in soaking wet, clinging dickies um, interesting, to say the least?)
: And then they would have to hold on to all their clothes while they jumped and swam for it. After all, pleasent as it might be, we just can't have two proper English upper class girls running about the frontier in their unmentionables now can we? Think of the scandal back in Boston!!
Hi SchoolMastah!
Ok, just for the heck of it... Bill R said that not too many ladies in that era knew how to swim. That, I accept. While Cora might have had the gumption to try doggie-paddle, Alice ... may have sunk like dead weight (no pun intended).
And I suppose Hawkeye figured that too.
On the other hand, the ladies did not wear too many heavy stuff, anyway. They left the fort dressed not to show off in a drawing room as a genteel English rose, but for a long trek upon an uncomfortable road, so they were not wearing all those petticoats and laces... they could have left their meager petticoats behind without taking off the dress... IF they knew how to swim.
Of course, even then, that kind of a drop down would have been a formidable task. What would I do? Hmmm. Am not sure if I'd want to take my chances with Magua...
Oh God, please! No more speculation for me!
Take care and have a good night...
