But I must also say that the more I watch the film, I develop a strong affection for the soft, yet powerful relationships between Hawkeye, Uncas & Chic.

: Soft, beautiful symbolism....I think that is the unspoken tenderness that I find so endearing about this film.

Diane, I couldn't agree with you more. One of the many things I love about this movie is the relationships between these three men. The gentle love for each other (generated as actors for us) is part of the "glue" for this movie: The caring touch that Hawkeye lays on Uncas' neck as they kneel around the footprint at Cameron's cabin after finding their friends dead; and the scene you mentioned inside the cabin as Ching. watches Uncas playing with the child....another touching look is the one as Uncas lays his hand on his Father's shoulder just before he scales the cliff to attempt to save Alice (and can we ever forget the look on the face of Ching. as he races along the cliffs toward the fight to avenge the death of his son?) I also love the scene with the three men in the sleeping quarters as soldiers come to arrest Hawkeye. (Now I must admit seeing Hawkeye's state of dress, or lack there of, influenced me here **sigh**) That "rush" to protect you see in Uncas and the anger you see in Ching. as he pushes away one of the soldier's rifles is extraordinary .......their love for Hawkeye and he for them, as he stated to them in this scene, is what most families wish from each other. The "NO MATTER WHAT, I AM ON YOUR SIDE" feeling is powerful throughout the movie and the personalities of the characters. Judy
