I like your observation about the hero qualities. And I agree that there is a point beyond which a reader or viewer cannot suspend reality to accept the hero's super-everything. It is much more enjoyable to read about people who, now and then, make a mistake or miss the target like the rest of us flawed "creaturs". As to Hawkeye, Cooper tried to make him humanly fallible, but he took his marksmanship to ridiculous levels - to the point that I found myself occasionally rooting for the opposition.
The characters in Lonesome Dove were wonderful, just because they were so human. That was a book I read more than once, and it was so perfect that I didn't even want sequels. As a novel, it was a SATISFYING experience.
