Hello Dear Ones:
Just back from an amazing evening at Symphony Hall (Boston) RAVI SHANKAR!! 86 and still rockin' hard!! Show opened with his lovely daughter Anoushka on sitar with a group of ten ... tabla, vina, tambouras, assorted drummers and vocalists, and sarod. What an amazing sound ... and I was just 5 rows from the stage. There were some definite sound problems ... tabla not mic'd well, and other trouble ... but they were just wonderful... A short intermission ...(I was able to have a lovely talk with the tabla player at the stage door .. as he was having a cigarette, and I was smoking something myself!) and out comes Pandit Ravi Shankar to thunderous ovation! It was very heart warming. Ravi, with a smaller band ... tabla, tamboura (drone) and Anoushka also playing sitar. Stated very quiet and beautiful evening raga .... until the tabla kicked in (still notloud enough) ... but so powerful and beautiful.
After an hour Ravi made an announcement that he has an addiction. Not drugs, or alcohol ... but incense ... and while meditating, or praying, or playing music ... he must have incense ... and the symphony Hall would not let him burn it! (They have in the past when I saw him) He was obviously quite upset about it ... and I'm imagining they had quite a fight about it. Perhaps that is why the sound was so poor?? ANYWAY .... a very wonderful and magical evening ... I highly recomend if they come to a town near you!! Peace

Jeff, Thanks for the wonderful review of Ravi ! I have yet to see him live since the concert for Bengla-Desh although I have seen him and his daughter perform on TV and videos.
Going to see Beck, Patti Smith, and Bob Weir in the near future. Pearl Jam in Montreal 2 weeks ago were amazing, especially since it was the anniversary of Johnny Ramones passing so they paid a tribute to him and The Ramones and I just happened to have a RAMONES tshirt on anf got singled out in the audience.
Frankie (Bean) Ramone who if I never told you this before in 1982 they were holding an audtions for a drummer when Tommy Ramone left the band, Joey who I knew pretty well from years before wanted me to come down and sit in for the audition but I backed out...Johnny had a lot to say about who would be in the band and even though he was from Franklin Sqaure I didn't know him too well but get this Dee Dee, Johnny and Joey all heard of The Iggy night and FTW...they read about it in Circus magazine and some other rock fanzines at the time plus word of mouth.
