I have 3- The 1st is John & Yoko at the Garden. The 2nd was at the Nassau Colliseum-Steely Dan opened-Doobie Bros.played second and Loggins & Messina were the main band. Also the first time I saw the Moody Blues at Jones Beach, lightning and storms-the band played on. Made the hair on my arms stand up and brought a tear to my eye when Justin Haywood's voice got hold of me. ElenaR

Lou I'm glad you said that and no me...!
Some of my most memorable concerts from early 70's..
August 23rd 1972 Kinks show at the Schaeffer Music Festival
March 30th, 1971 Kinks show at Philharmonic Hall, the infamous show where Ray toppled over the amplifiers and laid flat on his back and people mobbed the stage, I was tripping unknowingly, jumped off the balcony on to the stage...
Deep Purple at the Felt Forum right around Made in Japan era 71/72 Kinks at CW Post Dec 1970 Slade at CW Post...1970 Allman Brothers at CW Post 1970 or 71 The Runaways at my Fathers Place ? The Who at the Garden MC5 at Hofstra The Stooges at Max's Kansas City

Sorry Elena... Anyway here's my 2 cents: Bangla Desh concert in MSG (Arthur got me the tickets...thanks Arthur!) and Lennon's One-to-One concert. James Taylor at MSG wasn't that good (not the right venue for his early music)and I still don't remember the Jerry Jeff concert though I'm trying to! |

Hmmm, boy ... best shows, you ask?
You do realize, ElenaR, my dear that becomes totally dependant on my memory, or lack of ... but, here's a stab. Some of you were probably with me at most, if not all, these shows:
- Spirit at the Fillmore East - I talked a bit about this in another thread. It had to be the best of the best. I remember leaping in the air with ecstasy at one point, only to look to my left - on the way down - at a sleeping Foch! Well, it was the late show!
- A Dead show somewhere - For some mystical, unexplained reason, all the Dead shows - and there were many - I've ever been to sort of blend together. But one of them, I am sure, merits my list. One the didn't was the Watkins Glen Festival show in '73. The acid, though [window pane] was super ... and, my last trip!
- Dan Fogelberg at Hofstra Playhouse - The sound was absolutely superb!
- Deep Purple at Felt Forum - I agree with you on this one, Bean!
- Pink Floyd at Carnegie Hall - Maybe just because of the anti-symmetry! This was just before "Dark Side of the Moon," when they were just plain weird, not weird for weird's sake. There is a difference, ya know!
- Many shows at My Father's Place in Roslyn - Partly because of the intimate atmosphere, partly because of the sheer energy - Emmylou Harris & Pure Prairie League both put on stellar shows there. OH! Asleep at the Wheel, too. Maybe David Bromberg, but I'm not certain I saw him there, or elsewhere. All mentioned, though, were great performances!
There were others, to be sure ... Poco in Central Park was excellent, for example ... anyway ...
And, if I may:
Most Surprising: Dolly Parton at The Bitter End in NYC. I was not a fan, but received free tickets - I guess they were from the RCA Records salesman [I was running a record store - which reminds me of other Bean stories for another time ]. Anyway, I went ... She was all gaudy looking; blond wig, long, LONG red fingernails ... the works. I thought, "Oh, no!" BUT... wait! She was excellent. Earthy, talented, and good!
Worst Show: Van Halen at Nassau Coliseum - again, a tickets freebie. It sort of sounded like this: Loud, indistinguishable rumble blaring incessantly. [song] Someone pulled the plug, which ended the loud, indistinguishable rumble blaring incessantly. [between songs] Then, a familiar loud, indistinguishable rumble blaring incessantly [the next song]. This continued ad nauseum.
And there you have it ... |

What a long, strange trip it's been! |

My ex husband played My Father's Place. I met him when he was in a band with Joe Greco and Bob Cazazz. He played bass. I remember Led Zep at the Colliseum. Mountain at the Fillmore. Jackson Brown. Too stoned-too stoned-too boring, respectively.. ElenaR |

Worst Show had to be Black Oak Arkansas, I walked out on them, they were the headlining band at the Palladium but I really went there to see the opening band which was Roy Wood's Wizzard and they were amazing as I expected. This was in the in the mid 70's and Roy Wood hasn't been back until only last year and I saw him again.
Richie, I think you were correct about David Bromberg at My Father's place cause I saw him there a few times and once was an amazing show, he is currently touring again right now... Some of my Arlo Gutherie and Bob Dylan shows from way back right up to the present have been favorites too. I still see them every chance I get...
I have to also agree with you Richie on Spirit, I went for the Kinks that night and it changed my life forever but Spirit really blew me away too, I'll never forget as the curtain rose there was Randy California looking very Hendrix like in a long flowing robe and head band holding his guitar pointing up at the sky with a wall of amplifiers and feedback with the Joshua or Pig light show in the back ground...you didn't need drugs for this show....!!!
So how did I miss the pre Dark side of the Moon show from Floyd? I loved all their early records, UMMAGUMMA to his day is one of my favorite all time live records...and Syd Barett remains one of my musical heroes...funny story at a Patti Smith show at the Bowery Ballroom a few months ago some young girls stopped me and thought I looked like a young Syd Barett..it must have been that " out of my mind " look in my eyes !
Poco at Central park in the Summer of 72' was one of the most talked about shows that year ( next to the kinks show ) they were really on that night...I still love Picking up the Pieces.
Last night I saw this indie band Local H at the Knitting Factory in NY and they were really good...very Nirvanna Like and they have been around since the on set of the whole Seattle Grunge movement. Going to see Lou Reed next week, and just got some tiks for the up coming " Dead " shows this summer and a couple of Dylan shows too.
Bean...still Kranking after all these years.
" Hey Hey, My My, Rock and Roll will never die "....oh yeah got some Neil tiks too for some shows coming up with Lucinda Williams.

Speaking of Elephant's Memory and wishing I had one, I saw them with John and Yoko at the Garden on August 30, 1972 - I had to do a Google search tonight to get the exact date. I had just come back from a trip to Colombia, went into NYC, saw a line of people, and bought a ticket and saw them about an hour later, in the afternoon. I was surprised that it wasn't sold out. An album came out from it called "Live in New York City". -- Jackson Browne at the Palladium. I was robbed near there before the concert. They didn't take my concert ticket. Maybe they didn't like him. I still went but I was in a state of shock - my friend and I were in a record store and two guys whipped out a gun and knife. Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band at My Father's Place. I saw Bjork in LA - several guys came to the concert wearing skirts - they looked great! Saw Van Morrison at the Shrine Auditorium. Saw Cindy Lauper out here too. She was a riot! Brian Setzer Orchestra at the Troubadour. |

I'm remembering one of the best Savoy Brown shows at the Fillmore. Opening up was a band nobody heard of (Rennaisance) and the Kinks were 2nd on the bill. Sadly one of the Kinks were ill, so they cancelled and were replaced by The Voices of East Harlem. The best thing about that; many of the Kinks fans got refunds and went home. (were you one of those, Frank?) That left lots of open seats up front. So Jerry and I left our rear orchestra seats and settled into two beautiful almost front row center seats. Rennaisance opened and were immediatly mind blowing! Keith Relf (Yardbird) was lead singer with his sister Jane on background vocals. Phenominal classical piano player infused Beethoven etc... with rock and roll. Also an amazing bassist...Louis Cenamo. Anyway.... Amazing amazing set. We were all brought back to reality by the Voices of East Harlem. (Too bad about the Kinks) Then Savoy Brown!! What a night! We all boogied the night away... I think the original Rennaisance had one or two albums out.... Were then replaced by a totally different band with the same name and same general direction. They had some minor success, but really sucked compared to the original line-up. Anyway... that's one concert I will remember for years... |

Jeff....YES I was there for that Savoy Brown/Kinks show...and did leave when I found out that the Kinks were cancelling due to illness, I know Ray came out and announced to the audience that they were cancelling due to one of the band being sick, I later found out it was their drummer Mick Avory who had hepititus. I am sorry I didn't stay for the Savoy Brown and Rennaisance show....was Annie Haslam with them at that time? - Frank |

Regarding my favorite music performances, I agree with Louis. Bangladesh was one of my all time favorites. My absolute favorite though was a Joni Mitchell show in San Francisco in August of '79. Tom Doyle, Doris and I drove all day from Mexico and were just reaching SanFrancisco when we heard the show being advertised on the radio. (The show was for that night). On a lark we stopped by the theater to see if any tickets were still available. The girl in the ticket booth became a bit frazzled when somone came up behind her asking for Bill Graham's tickets. To make a long story short, we got Bill Graham's first row tickets for the best band I ever heard! The lineup was: Pat Matheny on Guitar, Lyle Mays on Keys, the late great Jaco Pastourius, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Alex Acuna and of course Joni. The sound and musicianship was superb! Pat Matheny's solos brought tears to my eyes. Jaco's mother sat behind us and booed when an up coming Stanly Clark show was announced. She also expressed concern when Jaco flailed his bass around during one of his solos. "Someday he is going to break that thing". Had my Nikon with me and got some great shots without having to leave the seat. That's my story for the month! "Shadows and Light" doc |

Not counting kinks shows....otherwise we would be here all day & all of the night...! but just to name but a few others.. Bangladesh, ranks high up on the list along with the time I saw Deep Purple 2 shows at the felt forum with Richie just after their Made in Japan tour... Spirit when the Kinks opened for them with the Bonzo Dog Band at the Filmore East October 17th & 18th 1969... When a bunch of us saw Stepponwolf, Rhinocerous and Spooky Tooth at the old World Fair Grounds... The MC5 and the Byrds at Hofstra College? The Doors at the Singer Bowl ( World Fair ) David Peel, The Stooges, and The MC5 at the Singer Bowl... Mountain Central Park Wollman Skating Rink...also The kinks show there on August 23, 1972 was the best kinks show ever! Poco also did a great show there... The Allman Brothers, Humble Pie and Beachboys at C.W. Post ( different shows ) The NY Dolls at the Felt Forum...and Mott the Hoople too... Mott the Hoople and Queen at a Broadway theatre... and our very first rock concert ever when Richie, me I think Foch, Vince and possibly Butch ( and maybe others too ) went to see Tommy James and the Shondells and Rhinocerous at the NY Collesium, little did I know 20 years later I would catch one of Nirvanna's last performances ever in the same venue !!! |

Let's get this thread going again -
My most memorable concerts (in no particular order):
Joe Walsh @ CW Post - I have a great cassette of this show that John Scoggins (of Ramparts fame) made, but it has since stopped playing - I remember Joe announcing "It's Post Time," so that's what I called this tape - This show was right before Joe joined the Eagles and he had Eagles tunes playing on the PA as we entered the auditorium
Joe Walsh @ the Coliseum - floor seats, so you had stand on your seat
Joe Walsh @ Westbury Music Fair - 2nd row seats and great acoustics
various Ringo shows @ Westbury - especially the one with Jack Bruce
Raspberries @ My Father's Place - I wish I would have caught their reunion show last year @ BB King's, but I did buy this great limited edition box set of memorabilia from the tour
Garland Jeffreys @ an uptown NYC classical concert hall, whose name escapes me, but that had the best acoustics of any show I've ever heard
the Stray Cats @ the Coliseum - general admission seating for this show, so you stood on the floor, instead of sitting
Rod Stewart & the Faces @ the Coliseum - floor seats and you stood on your chair all night - Rod, Ron Wood, and an orchestra
ELP @ the Coliseum - me and a couple of friends snuck into the show while the roadies were setting up in the daytime - they wound up helping the roadies set up, while I played "gopher" and went to Burger King in Hempstead for the crew - we all got to stay for the show that night - my friends worked the stage and I got to stand in the crowd - Carl Palmer had a drum set that flipped over while he was playing (you would've appreciated that, Bean)
Springsteen @ the Meadowlands or the Coliseum
the Stones @ the Meadowlands
the BMT's @ Arrows in Bellmore - they played here many times, but I remember one particular night when they did 3 encores
and the most memorable show by far was the Summer Festival for Peace at Shea Stadium on August 6, 1970 - a 12-hour anti-war concert with almost two dozen acts: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin & Big Brother, Poco, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Rascals, Paul Simon, Steppenwolf, Dionne Warwick, Genya Ravan and 10 Wheel Drive, Al Kooper, Richie Havens, Sha-Na-Na, Miles Davis, Paul Butterfied Blues Band, Country Joe and the Fish, the James Gang, John Sebastian, Pacific Gas & Electric, Staple Singers - Creedence closed the show and I remember "chooglin'" all the way down the Shea ramps and up the LIRR ramp and on the train the whole way home |

Garlend Jeffrey's was at the recent Benefit show for Arthur Lee 2 weeks ago at the Beacon theatre and did an amazing cover of Love's You set the Scene, others there were Ian Hunter, Yo La Tengo, Ryan Adams, and an amazing set that lasted until well after 1 AM from Robert Plant ! |

Rarely am I at a loss for words as many of you very well know but all I can and will say about our trip to Texas to see Ray is that before I left I thought I could not love, admire and respect Ray as an idol, performer, musician, songwriter, inspiration, and most of all a long time friend more than I already did,... BUT Ray has proved me wrong. We ( Andrea and me ) had such a great time in Dallas and Austin, and were treated so nice by Ray, Karin, his entire band, and all his crew from his road and tour mangers to the roadies, lightng, sound, guitar techs wardrobe person, ect...that I am for one of my very rare moments left speechless and all I can and will say is that Ray you are the man and I love you... You will always have my support no matter what you do. Thank you and your crew for everything and I know I will be seeing you again soon and want the chance to repay you, Karin and the guys ( especially DavieB and Matt ) for all being so generous and nice to us! You really do make it all worthwhile!
- Frank aka Bean always a dedicated follower, fan and friend.
