Interesting. He was a very articulate spokesman, but then, like Reagan, he was an actor as well. And this was only 2 years before LOTM. I heard at the Gatherings that he was "persona non grata" on Federally controlled land, so when they were filming at Linville, he had to be smuggled onto the set if there were Federal officials around.
He came to the Gathering in 2006. I remembered all the things from the '70's and I was prepared to not like him. But he really impressed me and totally changed my opinion. He was a great man. |

Never knew that he had to be smuggled onto the set - that borders on a crime. He does present himself well - but as you said - he's an actor & that goes a long way. - I've read (and still do) a lot of "first person" accounts of history - especially the "mountain-men"/trappers" era, around 1810 to about 1840ish ... Diaries/logs by men that "were there & lived that life" on a daily basis - tells you a whole different story from what you were taught about that era in school. - At those famous "yearly roundups" a number of Indian tribes came - mostly just to watch - some crazy things DID take place. - Some of those tribes would kill any trapper or anyone else if the got too close to their squaws. - While other tribes prostituted out the squaws in exchange for booze, tobacco, guns & gunpowder - that's not in any history book I've ever seen. |

Michael Mann, from the tales I have been told, was not to awfully concerned with what was legal or illegal. And the authority by which Russell Means was to be prevented from going on Federal Lands would probably vary by the make up of the Supreme Court. |

2004, Fitz. I had the same impressions of him. Russell was an amicable guy in person! |

2004! Has it been that long? I was sorry that I missed the one with Wes Studi. That would have been good. And I am sorry we never had a Gathering that included Madeleine Stowe. That would have been better. |
