I saw this on another board. It's in the Mohawk Valley not too far from Fort Johnson.

Fascinating Fitz, - and to have an honest comment about the smoking & drinking is refreshing too. No doubt it should be interesting to see what develops from this find.

I saw an article about this a couple of days after the flood happened. At that time, they had not started any excavations. I am so glad they are doing that now. The idiotic thing is that they knew the foundations were there when they covered them over with asphalt in 1987! Why on earth they didn't continue with excavations at that time, I will never understand. I sincerely hope they do not cover it up with a parking lot again. This is very valuable history.

Here is a good article about the origins of the fort:
Fort Hunter

In my travels up and down the Mohawk Valley, I've never stopped at this site. Now I will have to do that.

Here is another online article about the excavations.
Excavations Continue at Fort Hunter

Regarding the reference to Jane Fonda, it is true that her ancestors settled in the Mohawk Valley in the mid 1700s. There is a small village there called... Fonda. It was settled and founded by the ancestors of Jane and Henry Fonda.
