Just over a decade ago, the citizens of NC were faced with a dilemma. A developer was the low bidder on the DuPont property, which contains 4 waterfalls featured in LOTM. In addition to that, the tract of land is about 10,000 acres which include 90 miles of trails, several lakes, some rare plant and animal species, and other unique features.
A small group of citizens (only 10 people at first) couldn't stand the thought of this land becoming a private gated community, and mobilized to create a larger movement which petitioned the governor to intervene. Mike Easley, governor at the time, listened to the citizens' concerns and because of a huge response from people, he acquired the land by imminent domain, creating the public land that we know today as DuPont State Forest.
Since then, the land has been managed wonderfully by David Brown, forest supervisor, and his staff. They strike a delicate balance of preserving and managing the forest while still enabling a variety of users to enjoy the forest. We have been so lucky to enjoy the waterfalls at DuPont as part of our Mohican Gatherings, and many of you have visited on your own.
Now, changes in the structure of departments within the state may threaten the unique way DuPont Forest is managed. If you enjoy the recreational uses of DSF, please check out this informational page and see what you can do to let your voice be heard in Raleigh: http://dupontrecreation.com/ It is important that we let our representatives in Raleigh know how much we want to keep DSF operating the way it is. Thank you!
