The event at Crown Point will be this coming weekend. Is anyone from the Board going ? It will be, perhaps, the only time you can see the narrows without a bridge, just like it was when Champlain first came there in 1609. And the way it looked during the F&I War. Well, almost. The bad thing is, it will be a long swim to get to the Bridge Restaurant .

Take your bateaux with you!

I won't be going to this one, as it isn't on our regimental calendar. I'd really love to go back to Crown Point sometime, though. It's an amazing place. Every time I walk around those ruins, I fully expect to encounter a ghostly soldier. Wouldn't that just scare the crap outta me!

Have a good time!

Your north country? You live about as close to PA as you can and still be in New York. But you do have the cheapest motels around. I got a good deal on the Days Inn on Front Street this time. That area north of Syracuse up to Ogdensburg is what rural America is all about. SC hasn't seen any country like that since the 1950's. It's a beautiful place. Not "touristy" like the places around I-87. But once you get past Lake George, that country around Lake Champlain is really beautiful too. SC and NC are being ruined by developers. I love going to a place where that has not happened yet.

Ever heard of Ganondagan? I just might end up there in September.

I do now. But, as I have mentioned before, I lived on a small farm 30 miles away from Ogdensburg (outside the tiny village of Richville) for 7 years -- from 1978 until 1987. My children were born in the Ogdensburg Hospital. I still consider it "My" North Country, and I still miss it very much. That's partly why I was so excited to get back up there for the event.

Yes, it is. It is all beautiful up there. I adore it. And when you say that St. Lawrence County is Rural America, you are so right. Many of those farmers up there where I used to live are the direct descendants of people who settled there right after the Revolutionary War. Many of them still live in the big stone farmhouses their great-great-great-great-grandfathers built.

Yes, I am familiar with it. I have never been there; however, I have talked to people who have been, and they are quite impressed with it.

I would highly recommend that you stop at Fort Stanwix on your way across. You won't be sorry.

Hello all!
I've finally gotten around to officially registering, though I used to be a 'Lurking Huron'(remember that?).
Anyways, I'll be going to Crown Point this Sunday afternoon. . . after brief stops at FWH and Ft. Ti. in the morning (good books).
Fitzhugh, could I track you down to say hi? Where might I find you?

I will be with the Pequawket Alliance (French, of course). We usually camp against the outside of the back wall of Fort St. Frederick. We usually have a tent fly set up for the ladies and a few of the men who don't field with a musket.

Nothing like Ogdensburg, but about average for a non-250th event. Very good weather. I had to use two blankets at night! It seems like the best people come to the every-year events, and the people who are there for the show come to the big 250th ones. There were some highlanders there so you would have felt at home! And a number of really nice boats. Also, a goodly number of natives from, I think, the Eastern Woodland Confederacy. They were in full body paint. After the event they all went swimming and someone said you could see a greasy spot on the lake where they went in. Just a few sutlers and, thankfully, only one bagpiper. You should have been there. Binghamton is only about 4 hours away.

And I got by Fort Stanwix on the way up. It was well worth the trip. And I stopped by Ti to take a few pics of a particular item in their display and get a hamburger at the log cabin restaurant. The burger was average, but the view of Lake Champlain while you were eating was priceless.

Well Lad, I cannot speak for my Pennsylvania Colony bretheren, but the brae lads of Graham's Company had a previously scheduled engagement at Bushy Run for the same weekend...

I have always heard about that event. Must be a good one! Sadly, no French were there. Still . . .

But the Highlanders were well represented at Crown Point.

Sounds like a good event. I would have enjoyed being there again. I also would have enjoyed watching the Indians go swimming, and not to see the grease slick.

Isn't Fort Stanwix a good one? The new visitor's center is especially nice. When I sat and watched the film about the Battle of Oriskany, I cried. I was watching my Palatine ancestors.

Aye Fitz, it is a very fun event, and you are correct in that there were no French there historically. However, if you ever desire to make the trek, we have enough loaner items to kit you out as a private soldier of the 42nd RHR.

Of course, a picture of you in a red coat would be priceless

Hi Fitz
I'm glad to have met you and others allied with the Pequawkets. While recently googling Fort Wentworth I came across a history of Coos County in NH which stated the Pequawkets were located in the Saco Valley in Maine. Sometimes these older references are more interesting than recent ones given the editing seemed a bit looser.

Yep, you got me before the Brits. . . I must say I am still exploring 'sides' here at this point and am now on the fence (until now I've been picturing myself with a Provincial unit). So I'll hem and haw some more.

My daughter and I stopped at Fort Ti on the way home. . . too bad Fort William Henry doesn't/can't/won't update their museum to make it on par with that at Fort Ti or at Crown Point. . .

In reading the posts here, I noted the Bushy Run photos. . . I'd imagine there will be a big 250th reenactment for that in 2013 Sgt. Munro?

You are right Dave, and while we are all thinking of the 2013 reenactment, there are those groups who have never missed a year of supporting the site during those 'non-anniversary' years; and it is those guys who truly made some of those years very special. I personally have never missed a year since 1999, back when I was with the 77th Light Company (and I'm considered a 'youngster' among the regulars); and my own group hasn't missed a year since Gary & I founded it in 2002. The one British regulars group that has the honor of the most years of non-stop support is Capt. Robertson's Company (Light Coy.) of the 77th, which have never missed a year for three decades! The only other 'groups' to have been there longer would be the natives & rangers, although they formed formal associations a little later.

Over the years, we have seen upward and downward trends in attendence, and the number of attendees have seldom equated into the quality of the event. In other words, the 2013 reenactment will be a big one (since all 250th anniversary events seem to bring both 'long-trekers' and 'trendies'), and we will do our part to make it a great show, but it remains to see if it will be one of the special ones.
