One of my main reasons for selecting this time of the year for my visit to Upstate New York is the association of this particular area to one of my favorite Hollidays! And of course it helps that, though a bit "past its peak", the Fall is especially beautiful here. The Colonial connection is strong too, having been settled by the Dutch in the 1600's. Since I was here last, I'm very happy to have found that the Old Dutch Church has been completely restored from its former dingy state, including its large 19th century organ!

Of course the very large and imposing cemetery is also a fascinating place to wander about. The most-visited grave is probably that of Washington Irving, but there are many other 19th century notables, including many Civil War veterans. My own favorite "Hessian" is here, too: Union Major General Carl Schurz, later Hayes' Secretary of the Interior and briefly commander of the 11th ( German ) Corps at Gettysburg!

And Sleepy Hollow also played it's part in the Revolution, as told in Irving's Legend, as the place where the Patriot millitiamen John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams captured Sir Henry Clinton's adjutant general and spy John Andre on his attempted return to British lines after his meeting with Benedict Arnold!

Beautiful pictures, James! I would love to one day be able to visit a church like this. The best pic would have to be the one you took from the inside looking out the window at the cemetery. Just beautiful! I can only imagine the age of some of those head stones. And of course the changing leaves add alittle more beauty to it.
