I entered a post in the Mohican Recommended Reading section about a new-to-me book ( 2000 ) titled Fort William Henry - Digging Up History by Gerald E. Bradfield, the museum curator at the Lake George Village attraction. I wanted to also mention it HERE as a possible substitution for or addition to the standard book on the subject, Ian Steele's Betrayals. Its 135pp. ( including many B&W illustrations ) may be more accessable for the average reader who just wants to know a little about the facts, history, and setting of our "favorite" movie.

Besides, there's even a short chapter called The Influence of Hollywood, which says in part: "...By 1992 is was not archaelogy, but Hollywood which sparked interest in the old fort with Michael Mann's production of Last of the Mohicans." It then procceds to devote most of 2 pages to a most favorable description of the movie. But mainly it's about the site itself, naturalistic, historical, and archeological, including a little about relatively recent "digs" and forensic studies.

If you want a good general overview of the background to the movie, at only $12.95 it's a bargain! It can probably be ordered from the Fort William Henry gift shop.
