I recently returned from a vacation trip to Upstate New York, revisiting some of the actual sites of our "favorite" movie. Last time I somehow avoided going back to the "tourist trap" that is the Fort William Henry reconstruction. This time I had a bit longer to spend, so decided to see it again. I'm glad I did, one reason being a NEW ( to ME at least - Dec. 2000 ) book for sale in the gift shop: Fort William Henry - Digging Up History by Gerald E. Bradfield, curator of the museum.
It's an oversized paperback volume ( 7" X 10" ), 138pp. long, and a bargain at only $12.95. It briefly tells the entire story of the Lake George site, the French and Indian War, and Fort William Henry, including recently gathered information from archaelogical digs and forensic studies of the formerly exposed skeletons from the fort cemetery. This is the sort of general "overview" offered at most National Park sites, and is most welcome for the traveler wishing to know more about the subject without delving into anything TOO heavy or overlong. I began it there; and it furnished the perfect end to my trip during the flight back.
I especially recommend it to any fan of the movie or anyone wanting to either learn the basics or in my case, refresh my memory. It can probably be ordered from the Fort William Henry Museum gift shop. ( If this has been mentioned before here in the posts, sorry; a cursory look through the titles here failed to disclose it. )
