Hey, - whatever works, ... ;)
.
On this day in 1874, were spoken some of the most intriguing words in American jurisprudence.

In the late fall of the preceding year, a trail guide named Alferd (his spelling....not ours) Packer had led a party of twenty men into the San Juan Mountains. Ignoring warnings and early snows, Packer pushed his party onward.

Little was heard of the party for several months until Packer returned, alone, saying the party had abandoned him. When spring set in, however, the bulk of the party was found in the hills, the apparent victims of cannibalism.

At his trial Packer claimed that eating human flesh was the only means of survival in the frigid circumstances. The jury was unsympathetic and found him guilty. The judge was outright hostile and sentenced him to 40 years of hard labor.

And, as he left the courtroom, the judge shouted after him - "Packer, you depraved Republican son of a bitch, there was only seven Democrats in Hinsdale County ..... and you ate five of them."

History does not record whether that particular judge lost the next election by four or more votes. And, if you want to learn more about this tale, just drop by the student snack area at the University of Colorado. It's called the "Alferd A. Packer Memorial Grill." '

More like pork, Duncan, methinks.

Excellent point, my dear cousin Seamus. Or maybe they could be a 'chicken' that is packed with 'pork'... sort of a new twist on the Turducken, eh?

Would you call that a "Porken"....?? Could just be, 'cause that's what we're getting!

Mmmmm... I don't think I'd have the heart or guts to eat at that snack area! This topic shouldn't really funny but the way that judged called after Packer is! Geewhiz!

I just love stories about cannibalism Recently watched the PBS documentary about "The Donner Party" very interesting...makes us all wonder what we would "do" in the same situation.

The Donner party ran into one of the more well known Mountain Men, Bridger, Glass or Clayman, I think it was Clayman - before they left for the mountains. They told him of their plans to cross over the mountains and head for Oregon. He knew the mountains pretty well, - and strongly advised them to wait it out where they were until Spring, - it was FAR too late in the season for a slow moving party like theirs to make it.... Needless to say - they ignored his advice.

Read the story of Langlade at Pickawillany. Just Google it.

Yeah, Langlade is my hero. Really! Ended up being one of the founding fathers of Wisconsin, or somewhere up north like that.

These stories are interesting! One I remember was about a soccer team (from Uruguay, I think) that crashed in the mountains of South America in the 70's and was lost for 120 days. They sustained themselves on their deceased companions. They were finally found. There was a book and a movie based on it.

On another note, a co-worker (whose husband flew blackhawk helicopters in Afghanistan at the start of the war) told me that when they were stationed in South Korea some years prior, there was cannibalism going on in North Korea! I guess it's hard to really know what goes on in that country, but I was shocked.

Leah, - my barber, now in his 70's & a great guy, was a paratrooper in Korea. In fact he has three Purple Hearts for his efforts. On one occasion he and another guy got separated from their unit and ended up with a British unit consisting of Gurkha's with British officers. He said he was more afraid of the Gurkha's than the North Koreans, one tough but nutsy group. On one occasion a British officer let it be known that he'd pay good money for a pair of Chinese combat boots, but only ones in good condition. A couple of days later this officer was sleeping when a Gurkha woke him up, holding a large paper bag. In the bag was a pair of Chinese combat boots, - with the guys feet still in them.

Seamus-I'd rather eat Chinese, too! Enjoy the humor on this forum!

Monadnock G.-You think it would have been easier to just unlace the boots...Of course, having very limited knowledge on war lingo, I had to look up what Gurkhas were.
