Prior to the migration of the people from Asia who were come to be known as the Algonkins and the Iroquois, there was a great civilization of people who had been in the Americas since the glaciers receeded 15,000 years ago. These were the Mound Builders. Although eventually defeated by Asian tribes, the Mound Builders were technologically advanced and taught the new comers a great deal.

Maize was cultivated from wild grass that grew in the Balsas Valley in Southwest Mexico 8,700 years ago. I believe it was the Mound Builders who had the trade routes that allowed domestic maize to reach well up into North America. It certainly would not have been the relative newcomers to the area that could have got maize seeds from Central America. So it was the Mound Builders that the Algonkin and the Iroquois learned agriculture from. Prior to that they had been strickly hunters and gatherers, and NOMADIC. Agriculture allowed them to settle down in one place.

The A&I people also learned agriculture, pottery, metalurgy, medical and mortuary skills from the Mound Builders. And also, which probally led to their demise, warfare. It was from the Mound Builders that the A&I learned about fortifications, and how to seige them.

Here is a Youtube about Cahokia. The capital of the Mound Builder's empire:
