Well, my friends, about an hour ago we got THE CALL that we were expecting from Mrs. Obi's (aka Pauline) oncologist...

The Bad News: Pauline's colon cancer has returned (after almost 6 years!). This time it's Stage 4 (out of 4). Even though we were expecting this, still, it's tough to hear.

The Good News: Because it's Stage 4, there will be NO surgery this time around, just chemo only. The cancer has spread just to the lymph nodes (they did their job again), and not to her liver or lungs, praise God!

Pauline is sure she will have a port installed this time also. I said that maybe it would be raining; I got a glare from her for that...she knew what I meant: "Any port in a storm!" Sometimes she has no sense of humor at all...

So...please include Pauline in your prayers and thoughts; I know you will...

TIA

Obi, I am sorry to hear this, and will certainly add you and Pauline to my list. Such news is always a kicker, even when it IS expected, but stay positive, my friend, that is GOOD medicine.

I truly understand her plight, and live with my port, too. I asked it be inserted on my left chest so as not to be in the way of my shoulder-arms...rifle, shotgun, etc. It is not a bother and you hardly know it is there, once the healing from insertion is done. Now, I always say, "Lots of port in a storm!"

God Bless you both, Obi, and please do include us in how it goes. We ALL care out here...........and here comes a 'tough guy' hug for you.

I, too, am so sorry to hear this. There's not much else I can say that hasn't already been said by GG and Seamus. I will only reiterate this: her mental outlook is everything. Help her to stay absolutely certain that she will beat this again. I know that with that, and with God's help, she will be fine. She is already in my prayers.

Hey, Seamus is right! You can never have too much Port!

Take good care of her, Obi, and take care of yourself, too.

Hugs from WW.

Well, we met with the oncologist last night--he's absolutely excellent (which we already knew)! He's very honest and very positive about her situation:

She's stuck with this crap for the rest of her life BUT she's going to be around for a long time...she'll be getting chemo treatments for the rest of her life too, which is no big deal, really. Next week she gets her port & on 12/16 she starts her first bi-weekly chemo cycle.

The doc said she has several major positives going for her: her positive attitude, her excellent health, the fact it has been so long since her original bout (5 years!), and also that this stuff only reached her lymph nodes, not her liver. Of course, he forgot to mention the most important thing: she has ME!

Thanks once more, friends, for all your prayers & thoughts.

Like I told my Oncologist: "I can live with chronic." He had just told me I would not die FROM mine, but would die WITH it.

Obi, I am much relieved to hear your wonderful news! I want you to know that you both will remain on my ever-lengthening prayer list.

God Bless you both, and thanks for letting us know.

Obi, I've already sent several prayers up for Pauline. And some for you, as well. If, as Romans 5:3 says, that tribulation produces patience then you and Pauline must be some of the MOST patient people around. But, the preceding verse says that we rejoice in hope. My hope for you both is many, many more years together.

Latest update...Pauline (she will not allow me to refer to her as "Mrs Obi" any longer, on pain of death [or maiming, I'm not sure which]) got her medi-port installed last Thursday & had her 1st chemo session yesterday. It wasn't too bad, other than the original stick into her port (which hasn't quite healed up from the surgery to install it) which smarted a bit...after that, no problema. Right now she's wearing a pump (for 46 hours). She goes back in tomorrow to be disconnected -- and 12 days later, she starts this cycle all over again! Some side-effects has already shown up -- she is extremely sensitive to cold & the acid from fruits (or juices) cause cramps.

Thanks again, my friends for all your thoughts and prayers (this one's just for the girls, sorry Seamus!)

That's OK, Obi.....I give "Man-hugs", but I don't kiss (on the first date!)......
Bless Mrs. Obi, er....Pauline, and you, too. She will get used to the port....tell her to make sure the tech or nurse sprays it good with a skin refrigerant that helps relieve the pain of the 'needle stick', then all she should feel is the pressure of the entry. It will hurt like the dickens if it isn't cold enough! I'm a veteran of THAT!

Somehow, Seamus, I don't think you're quite my type...

As I mentioned previously, Pauline did not appreciate my humor about "any port in a storm." When I mentioned this to my Family Practitioner, he made a crack about "a port in every girl." When I finished laughing, I warned him to look over his shoulder; she was going to come after him...

Oh yeah, before I forget...the oncology nurse couldn't spray on that freezing stuff because the wound from her surgery (installing the port) wasn't completely healed; by the next go-round, it will be.

GOOD NEWS!! Last Wednesday, Pauline asked the oncologist about the "cancer markers," what are they & what was her marker number. Just in case any of you wanted to know (and even if you didn't), cancer markers are a measurement of the amount of (evil) protein put in one's bloodstream by the tumors. The perfect range is 2.0-5.0; Pauline's is 3.5!!! So, after three more cycles, she should get a scan & then (hopefully) be able to kick back from this crapola for a while, which would be great since she can't taste anything now, not even chocolate! As she put it, "thank God for lazy tumors!" BTW Seamus, that freezing spray doesn't help her; it still hurts when she get stuck!

Once again, my friends, thanks for all your prayers; it has been a great help. Please don't stop now!
