Spark the Second American Civil War. Blood Will Run in the Streets'
by Jason Horowitz | October 30, 2008
.

It seems that the final days of the presidential campaign have made Erica Jong and her friends more than a little anxious.

A few days ago, Jong, the author and self-described feminist, gave an interview to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the choicest bits of which were brought to my attention by the reliably sharp-eyed Christian Rocca, the U.S. correspondent of Il Foglio, who published excerpts on his Camillo blog. Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an "obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night." She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War.

Here's a translation of Jong's more spirited quotes to the Milan-based Corriere, as selected by Rocca.

"The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged."

"My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can't cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduces her to a bundle of nerves."

"My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium."

"After having stolen the last two elections, the Republican Mafia"

"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it's not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets."

"Bush has transformed America into a police state, from torture to the imprisonment of reporters, to the Patriot Act."

She also laments that not all of America's men of letters share her devotion to Obama.

"Tom Wolfe and John Updike are men of the right and Philip Roth is at this point a hermit who leads a monastic life in Connecticut, far from everything and everybody."

Luckily, she said there is her and Michael Chabon, who, she says, have "taken the place of Susan Sontag and Norman Mailer respectively."

They have the same political sensibilities, she said, but a better "sense of humor."

This just proves that the Left would be absolutely hillarious, if they were not a serious threat to life, liberty & prosperity.

Yeah, Dick Cheney's heart condition has apparently improved quite a bit, - now he's gonna "lead the troops" against Americans. .... Ya' know, you really couldn't make this stuff up, - it's simply too far "off the wall". I doubt popping a Valium is really gonna be of much help, - that's why the good Lord invented "padded rooms". ;)

I'm sure that liberals must really love the 1st line of "Let's Do the Timewarp Again" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show:

"It's just a jump to the left,"

Of course they'd freak out if they ever bothered to read the 2nd line:

"And a step to the right!"

Well, I hope YOUR hearts can stand the shock -- I agree with you! At least to the extent of believing that "Looney-Tunes" is an apt description for the people mentioned here. As is "self-involved" -- ladies, no one cares about the state of your backs! I have a great deal more faith in the durability and resiliency of American democracy than they do. Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday, there isn't going to be any blood in the streets, much less a second Civil War.

Although Dick Cheney leading troops would be something to see.

There is nothing wrong with changing one's political beliefs with age and experience. When I was a teenager, I could have easily supported any leftist cause; but then I changed as I grew-up, assumed responsibilities beyond my own interests, and became a stake-holder in society.

In short, it reminds me of one definition of a 'neo-conservative'. It is described as 'a liberal who was mugged'

Describes me perfectly!

I agree also those comments sound ridiculous, but I have to say the same "eyeroll" is evoked when I hear Democrats referred to as Marxists and Nazi-esque. Sorry, Sarge!

Wow, finally a woman author who is a bigger nut job than the late Susan Sontag. I didn't think it could happen...

Considering Erica Jong's career has been all downhill since "Fear of Flying," I guess she has to have something to do. Where is her rubber room...excuse me, home...located, so I know which part of the country to avoid...

But seriously, this left wing insanity is just as bad as some of the ultra-ultra-ultra-ultra reactionary right wing claptrap I used to get in emails when I covered religion for the large corporate newspapers. It just proves that sheer lunacy exists on both sides of the political fence. It just seems that this year more of it is spilling over from the left. I really hope Italians don't think all Americans are like this.

See this face? This is the face of a woman on the edge.
