I just returned from a trip to Fort Toulouse, which is just north of Montgomery, AL. It is a reconstruction of a French fort which was about 50 years old by the time the F&I war started. The fort is a split log palisade with stucco log housed inside. It houses a company of French Marines. Also precent were a number of their Creek allies, and traders, who continually stirred up the Creek against the English.
This was in conjunction with "Frontier Days" and included a mixture of time periods (separated, of course) including the War of 1812. Lots of sutlers, too. I was only there for one afternoon, but I plan to go back.

OHMIGOD! Fitz, I was there on Thursday with my school's field trip. If I had known you were coming I would have made a point to find you. I've been pretty lucky in tracking down a couple of Clabair's friends who come and my neighbors participate in this. Mark your calendar....April 11-13---F & I Encampment. And next year's Frontier Days is scheduled for November 5-9. I live about an hour away. Gees!

Yes, Fort Toulouse has a webpage.

Click on the Fort Toulouse highlight and it will take you there. They have monthly garrisons every third weekend of the month. And, as you saw, in April there is a French and Indian Encampment. If you're interested, I could probably direct you to someone who might be able to inform you about it. Good luck!

Theresa, we were there at different times. I was only there for Saturday afternoon. I drove down from Greenville, SC, mainly to visit with the sutlers, but also to check out the Fort for myself and a friend who is an 18th century woodworker and has been thinking about making the trip to be part of the event. I was looking for a waistcoat, and I was disappointed that there were so few selling them at the Camden, SC reenactment. Fort Toulouse had a good selection. I found some I liked very much, so I am having one make to my specs. I was able to get measured and fitted for size on the spot. I guess that Fort Toulouse and Fort Loudoun in September had the best collection of sutlers I saw this year.

Another possibility would be Camden, SC on the first weekend in November. There are a large numbers of British and American troops of many varied units, and is not a reenactment of "the Battle of Camden", but an AWI battle in general. There is a nice Guy Fawkes celebration on Saturday night. Of course, all this may be a little later than your time period, but it is the biggest event in this area. |

Please let me know if you come and Claude and I will venture that way to look you up. I've not been to this particular event but I understand it's very good. My neighbors are French Marines that live in the fort and they are trying to recruit us into doing this. OH! And here's a bit of info. They have discovered a French Colonial farmstead and are excavating on site. I went down there this summer and talked to the people doing this and found it very interesting. They were pretty sure they had found the chimney location and once all the excavating is done and artifacts are collected they are planning to reconstruct this farmstead. Just FYI. Keep in touch on this, ok?
