So yesterday I was in a local Chamber of Commerce picking up brochures for our Gathering welcome packets. There were two ladies behind the counter, and the phone rang and one lady answered it. She told the person to hold on and asked the other lady, "which waterfall was it that they walked under in Last of the Mohicans? Was it Hooker Falls?" The other lady didn't know. I know it was sorta rude but I butted in and told her it was Bridal Veil. So she told the caller, who then apparently started asking her about Chimney Rock and the film locations there; again, she wasn't very knowledgeable about the film sites but did give them directions.
I was trying to tell the lady that we had an upcoming group tour of the sites, but apparently the people who were calling were in town right then. I also tried to give her this website address but I think by that time she was a little annoyed with me. Oh well! She should have just handed the phone to me so I could direct them here!
So, I just wanted to point out how lucky we are to have Rich and his website, his guidebook, and his creation of the Gatherings. I can't imagine starting out from scratch trying to find these film locations. Rich put a lot of leg work into this so we could easily locate and enjoy the film sites.
So.... THANK YOU RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You really should consider re-publishing the first edition guidebook; there is obviously a need for it!!

BUT, that first edition [only 1000 copies printed of that] cost me a fortune!!! Full color does not come cheap, unfortunately. Perhaps - I know I would like to - a third edition could be done, updated with CRP news [it's state-owned now], etc. but to do the first again ... I doubt that very much.
Your story did take me back to the days I was searching out all those places ... a lot of encounters like that.
BTW -- the current edition does include the entire first edition [in B&W] ... it's just that the photo quality is poor. |

Don't get me wrong, I love the current edition, too. So many extras!! But I am a bit partial to the simplicity of the first edition. Oh yeah, and then there's the pictures!
That encounter in the Chamber of Commerce made me feel like a kid in class: I know! I know!! Pick me! Pick me! It was pretty funny. I think I got on the lady's nerves.   |

I think it was the first gathering when I stopped into the
Chamber of Commerce in Asheville. I too was very disappointed
with them not having information on film location sites.
They should have something about our group too.
I'm glad you told them what you did. But there again they missed
the boat! Don't they "want" tourists?
They could do much better representing the area.

Steph,
You need to apply for a part time job at the chamber of commerce.
Too bad the people were already there and didn't know about Rich's site.
Maybe when they get home, they will look up some info on the internet and join us in 2010.

So I read your post Stephanie, and what came to my mind was not that you were being a pain in the patootie, but rather, that if the callers or the Chamber of Commerce had done even a brief, cursory Google search, they might have found the information from this website!!
Granted, maybe the callers didn't have internet access... but my cynical and self-sufficient side says that they just wanted someone else to do the work for them!
As for the lady who got annoyed at you, maybe it was just that you knew something that she maybe should have known or been able to find out, and you may have made her feel embarrassed or threatened....but of course, that's HER problem, not yours!!!
What I find heartening is that even 15+ years after the original movie, people are still looking for the locations---there's really something special there that people remember even years later. How many other movies do we look for the locations for? We have the Philadelphia Art Museum steps in Philly where people still do the Rocky Balboa thing...! |

Yeah, I wondered why they hadn't Googled it, but hopefully they did when they got home. Maybe they will find us, no matter how long it takes, no matter how far....
Last time I was in DC on the National Mall I almost did a Forest Gump reenactment. I bet a lot of people do that! |

I just watched the DVD behind the scenes version of the movie
"Stand By Me". It was mostly filmed in Oregon.
It says people go there all the time to visit the film locations.
They have a walking tour brochure for the tourists.
Asheville should have one of these for LOTM's film locations.
(They should have Rich's book for sale in the chamber of commerce.)

I agree. They should have Rich's book for sale at the chamber of commerce. It would really help alot of Asheville's visitors!!!
Ummmm, I would love to have your temps right now. It has been in the triple digits here in SC, but it is supposed to cool down to the lower 90's by the weekend.
