Has anyone seen the previews to this movie? If I'm not mistaken it is about the Navajo language which was used as code during WWII. I'm not sure of the release date but I believe it's due out in early summer. Also, from "Cable in the Classroom"...

I am also looking forward to this movie! The previews look promising although I was surprised to see Adam Beach in the main role. Does anyone know the release date?

I've seen the previews & heard the story line awhile back. It appears to be a very good production of a story long overdue for telling.
I think it will make the Navajo people quite proud.

It's too bad that I am not receiving the History Channel anymore. Hopefully A&E will have a programme on it as well.
At least a Canadian magazine I am subscribed too had a nice article about Adam Beach.

Made it too see this movie last night. There were some areas where I expected more and some pleasant surprises.
I had certainly expected to see some background into how the
Navajo language was selected and how they approached these young men. The movie begins with a bus load of Navajo men heading off to the Pacific WWII arena. It deals with some racism toward these men and how they eventually were respected and reverred. There was also A LOT of war movie action scenes, very graphic, more fighting than I thought was needed to tell the story.
The pleasant surprise was what an absolutely wonderful job Adam Beach did. He WAS Ben Yahzee! I was also often reminded by the tone of their language of Mike Phillip's quiet gutteral (?sp) voice. It was really beautiful sounding. I thought they did a good job portraying the relationships the code talkers had with their protectors. How hard it was for them not to admire one another and thus become attached to them, which made the struggle with their hearts so much harder when they would have to kill the code talkers if they were in danger of being captured. Protect the code! Nick Cage was OK in this movie (hated his accent in Captain Corellis Mandolin), but Adam steals the show in my mind.
A sort of conundrum to me was the casting of Swedish actor Peter Stormare (whom I like - Chocolat is one of my new favorite movies) as the featured unit's Captain. Half a sentence he sounded Texan, the other Swedish. I had no problem with his acting in the role, was just distracted I guess, by the attempted southern accent. Go Figure!
To sum up...Story overall was good, lacking some background though, Adam Beach was outstanding, and the explosives experts certainly earned their paycheck!

Does anyone know if this is actually the case? Or is it a "literary" device?

Scott, I was able to catch bits and pieces of the History Channel program, "Navajo Code Talkers" yesterday morning. I believe it stated that they were to kill any that were captured to protect the code. I taped it and plan to watch it from beginning to end this evening. I'll let you know for sure.

Hey Scott. Watched the tape of the Code Talkers yesterday and there was nothing stated about killing the Code Talkers if they were captured to "protect the code". I remember reading this in the Punch magazine insert in Sunday's paper but they were talking about the movie rather than actual events. So, it appears, this might have been a "literary' device as you suggest.
This program on the History Channel was very good. It was informative with a lot of background and many of the Code Talkers were interviewed. AND, I didn't know this either, but they had the same set up in Europe using Commanches as Code Talkers.

According to the autobiographies and accounts of their experiences written by Codetalkers, the Marine guards were assigned not for the purpose of protecting the code by killing the Codetalker in the event of capture, but to protect the Codetalker from "friendly fire", caused to some extent by racism, but mostly because your average white Midwesterner couldn't tell a Navaho from a Japanese and were inclined to shoot first and ask questions later. Interestingly, the Japanese, on many occasions, mistook Navahos for their own troops, and on at least one occasion, this mistake enabled a Codetalker to take 14 Japanese prisoners single-handedly, merely by ordering them in Japanese to get out of their foxhole and lay down their weapons!...they thought he was a Japanese officer and were astonished to find out that he was fighting on the side of the Allies! BTW, according to the Codetalker, he never got credit for the capture; all incidents involving Codetalkers were considered "classified" by the US, and many still aren't common knowledge. I enjoyed this movie.There was a lot of action and the dialogue was good.It made me think of a friend from the Edge Hill Society(Bushy Run)assisting with a staff ride for some Congressmen & Military Officers a little while back.As they were conducting ambushes and fire & manuver for them, an Army Officer remarked"That looks a lot like what we do"to which my friend Shawnee War Chief"pretty ears" remarked "where do you think you learned it from?"

In case any of you missed the program back in June that the History Channel aired, "Navajo Code Talkers" will re-air September 17 at 12 pm eastern and again at 6pm eastern. Check your local listings or the handy tv schedule at the top of the Mohican Board. This is a very interesting program.

Caught a familiar face guest starring as a shaman in USA Network's Dead Zone. An episode that I enjoyed thoroughly. This episode should be in re-shown throughout the week.

| Well, I finally got around to watching this movie last night, and I just loved it! I was somewhat disappointed that they didn't get more into the background of the code and how it was developed, but overall the movie was excellent. I am somewhat surprised that this is the first time (or am I mistaken?) that a movie was made about the Navajo Codetalkers since they had such a major impact on the war! |

Hello to all again.
I see that I am not the only one here who likes the movie " Windtalkers" here.
I was in the Marine Corps ( 1982 to 1989) and had heard a bit about the codetalkers while in the Corps...Still in use btw but I can't say where.
Some of the movie was filmed in a area that I love to go hiking and backpacking in here in So Cali. It's the Sespe Creek area of Los Padres Nat'l Forest. A case in point is where the Marines are being shelled upon the road by the heavy Japanese arty ( Many big guns)...That road is the ONLY way into the Dough Flat trail head.
Another landmark that we would all know is the scence where Ben Affleck is taking a bath in the creek...That big ole sycamore tree has shaded me and propped up my pack a lot over the last 20 years...LOL!!
As I've spent a lot of time back there and I know that the local Indians used the area and still do as part of thier beliefs, I was deeply touched by the use of Native American rituals in the movie during various points of the movie.
Ok.....I'll stop now...I only wished to share.

| I saw the movie a while ago and liked it but I don't recall Ben Affleck being in it. Do you mean Nicholas Cage perhaps? I loved Adam Beach in this one. He always gives a great performance. |

I haven't yet seen it, but this sounds like a truly good movie to see. I'm hoping to pick up the Director's Extended Version DVD as it is supposed to have lots of fabulous extras.
