I was looking at a map of the Ticonderoga area and reading about the battle scenarios, and one mentioned a battle in a park in the town of Ticonderoga involving some waterfalls on the La Chute river. Then all of a sudden I realized that I had finally figured out the canoe chase sequence. The Brits are ambushed by the shore of Lake George, Hawkeye and Coy. jump in the canoes, pursued by Magua and the Hurons, and paddle the entire length of Lake George from south to north. The river they enter is the La Chute, and the waterfalls would have to be the ones in the middle of downtown Ticonderoga. Finally! After all these years I have my answer. It's one long paddle, but when you are good, you are good!

They made it look so easy in the movie too, didn't they? To travel allllll that way in a matter of minutes. But that's okay Hawkeye's sense of direction was off too, as I think was discussed on another thread.

In theory, your scenario would work, assuming that their arms had not fallen off from that long, long paddle up-lake. However, in reality, it would not. I believe our Fearless Heroes would have broken their fool necks trying to jump from the top of the LaChute Falls! They are not, you see, nearly tall enough, nor do they have a steep enough pitch. Plus there is the fact that there is no convenient cave from which to jump.

Well . . . I don't know. There COULD be a cave under those falls, and with a good running strart, well . . .

For those who may have missed the point of all this, next summer is the 250th anniversary of the Seige of Fort Carillon (aka Fort Ticonderoga) where Montcalm's army defeated a force of British under Abercrombie five times it's size. It will be a HUGH event, probably the biggest of any of the 250th anniversary events. On Friday afternoon there will be a battle representing the engagement where Gage was killed at the start of the seige. This will be in the downtown park and will involve the La Chute falls. Now, the fact that it is a 250th event, and a very big one, is good in itself. But the fact that it is at Ticonderoga makes it just that much more special. Combine all that with my leap from the falls, flintlock in hand, and it's one you won't want to miss.
So next summer I go to the Mohican Gathering, then leave for Ticonderoga the next week, then go to Huck's Defeat at Brattonsville (biggest Rev War event in SC), then leave for Louisbourg. I wonder what I will do with my spare time? |

| Ah, Fitz; Read the book...Cooper's Cave- Glens Falls NY: A 15 mile portage(south) from the lake; impossible except overland. Or, they could have carried their canoe East over the Black Mt. pass as Rogers (supposedly) did..Then, they would canoe down Wood Creek to Fort Edward and... portage over the Hudson Falls to Glens Falls and hide out in......Cooper's Cave. Movie license. And Fennimore Cooper's narrative uses these actual historic land forms to narrate a seamless and pretty good story. I'm Ok with it. Michael Mann would have been derided if he were true to the cave by having Magua wedge his way into it to get at the Munro sisters. Also, I've done the "La Chute" gig..Real shallow on the Lake George side..No caves or waterfalls. Cooper's Cave is now accessible due to a lot of money spent to "View" it On the South Glens Falls side of the Fennimore Bridge. Glens Falls' (Wing's Falls') claim to fame. I hope you don't think I'm being snotty..I'm fed up with shoveling snow every day for 9 weeks here in "Mohican Land"...So, go to google images and check out Cooper's Cave. |

| Fitz...Unfortunately we are flying to San Antonio for a symposium. So I will miss the 250th anniversary battle of Carillon and Abercrombie's debacle. On the other hand...Cold Margaritas and Warm Senoritas. Staying a block from the Alamo and the wonderfully historic River Crawl---River Walk that is. I plan on being at Crown Point. |
