Thanks Blackie. This looks like it will be excellent especially with Tom Hanks producing. If he is involved it has to be a quality production. I for one, will be watching. |

Wonder why the make-up folks put such a huge fake nose on the guy who's playing George Washington. Check it out: Image Insert:

This is one of the extremely rare times that I wish I subscribed to HBO. This promises to be magnificent. I'm going to have to check around with my friends to see if anyone I know has HBO and a DVD recorder. I have got to see this, and I don't want to have to wait for it.
The cast looks excellent. Although I am not familiar with the actor and actress who are playing John and Abigail, I am a big fan of both Tom Wilkinson and Rufus Sewell. I will be most interested to see how well David Morse does with playing My Hero.
This could be very, very good. John and Abigail Adams have had my admiration for quite some time. They were both amazing people. |

I'm with you on this one, WW. I'm very tempted to call the cable company and get HBO just for the month of March and possibly April. I really don't want to miss this show! |

I can wait til it comes out on DVD. I bought HBO for Band of Brothers and the Sopranos, it was worth it for those two but not for one show. HBO has nothing to offer for the most part except for their exceptional mini-series'. I can only watch C.H.U.D. so many times and then my head explodes. As I type this I checked their schedule...nothing on I haven't seen.. nothing I want to watch.... |

I am assuming that David Morse's portrayal of George Washington is that of the older man as President, or nearly President. He is wearing his military uniform in that photo, but if they are trying to portray the Revolutionary War age General Washington, they have made him look too old.
A life mask was taken of Washington's face in 1785 by the French scupltor Houdon. Washington was then 53 years old. No painter ever really accurately captured his appearance, although a couple may have come close.
You can see the actual face of 53 year old George Washington here: Life Mask.
And here is a picture of the bust that Houdon made using the life mask.

Houdon also sculpted a full statue of Washington, using the life mask for his face, and actual body measurements, that stands in the rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol building in Richmond.
And, finally... the new visitor's center at Mt. Vernon is now open. On display are three wax figures of Washington: the 19-year old surveyor, the Revolutionary War General, and the 1st President. All three faces were scientifically created using the life mask as a basis, with computer imagery and forensics techniques. They are now considered to be the most accurate models of George Washington ever created, since the Houdon life mask.
Here is the face of 19-year old George Washington.

Simply amazing.

Actually, you don't. What you are seeing in those photos on that link is probably the first casting that was made from the mask. The same technique is still used today, most notably by Hollywood special effects people.
You make the mask on the person's face, with the eyes closed, by placing strips of fabric dipped into the plaster -- much like paper mache'. It is a reverse image, because the face is on the inside of the mask. When that is completely hardened, it becomes the mold into which you pour the plaster. When that is hardened, you have to (usually) destroy the mask to get it off of the plaster casting. When that is revealed, you have what you see in those links. The sculptor then carved the eyes to look as though they are open. |

I agree with you about that fake nose, Red. Just doesn't look right.
Uh-huh! Uh-hun! See??? Told you, didn't I? Is it any wonder that the young widow Martha Custis fell for him? Besides the fact that from all accounts, he was a very nice, kind and loving man. And a good dancer! Sigh. |

Okay so did anyone else besides myself watch this last night? I enjoyed it very much and it was one of those rare occasions when my husband actually sat and watched with me. He was giving me a "history" lesson along the way. He really enjoyed it being a "history buff" of sorts. Very well done and I thought Laura Linney was wonderful as Abigail Adams and Giamatti did a good job as John. |

I absolutely agree, Irish, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes last evening. Laura Linney did an excellent job as well as Paul Giomatti(sp). He was very believable! I think it got alittle slow toward the second episode but only to lead up to the action of the next few installments. David Morse made a very realistic Washington. I couldn't take my eyes off his nose though, it's a bit over done! I can't wait for the next part!! I'm ready and waiting! |

Washington looked a little old for someone in his early 40's. And his uniform? When did he select that combination of colors. It is in his later pictures, but in 1776? |

There have been questions already about his uniform when appearing at he Cont. Congress. I thought history told us that he appeared in his old Virginia Militia Colonel's uniform, not the later blue and buff Continental Uniform? |

washington was col. of "fairfax independent company of voluntiers" at the time of the 2nd congress may-june1775,they were known to wear a uniform of blue faced buff. it has been assumed that this was the uniform washington was wearing in philadelphia, not his older virgina provincial blue/red worn during the late war. washington adopted the fairfax uniform for use as the general officers uniform for the continental army. the show was good. washington a little old and stiff, i mean he was only 43 at the time and his hair was not white! then again almost every depiction of washington on film is wrong.... h-b |

Well, all you need to do is to compare the photo of the actor portraying him above to the image I posted underneath it of the bust that was made of him from the life mask, when he was 53, to know that they made that actor look just w-a-a-a-a-y too old to play the 43 year old Washington.
I think it's horrible, and wrong to give people the impression that he was "old" during the Revolutionary War. He was not. He was still young, very strong and vital.
I agree with what you say about nearly every portrayal of Washington on film being wrong. I still think that the closest they have been able to come, so far, was in casting Jeff Daniels as Washington in "The Crossing." Right height, right age, very similar appearance characteristics. Nearly perfect. |

Here is a post made on the Revlist from one of the participants:
quote: Hi list, I don't have HBO, so it will be awhile before I get to see this series. Since I was involved in the early filming, I'm glad to hear that people feel, that Hollywood tried to get this right. I'm here to share with you, what I saw that the Military Coordinators had to deal with. First, they are members of this list, so they know the different between the 64th & Von Steuben drills. They told us to bring our full kits, production overruled the MC's and told us we had to use whatever leftover crap they had in the trailer from the Patriot, and Sharps. From past experience, I knew better than to wear paper thin shoes that don't fit. So I only wore their hat, coat, wig, and use their musket, everything else was mine. I had to received their stuff, but I left it hanging on the rack under my name. Since we all knew the MC's, I was upfront with them and told them what I had done. They said thank you and try to past the word around for others to do the same. The MC's wanted us to have clothes that fit, to be able to drink from our canteens, and really wanted us to be able to use our own muskets. The MC's also knew what uniforms were right and wrong. Once again they were overruled. To some people, red regimentals all look the same. On the first day of filming in red coats, the MC's only had one hour to drill us, and not all of us were reenactors. So, long story short, the MC's had their hands tied. I'm not blasting John Adams, I'm just standing up for the MC's. I had a good time, and the set was the most impressive, I've ever seen. So, like it's already been stated on other post's, this might be the best effort, by Hollywood to get it right. Yours.......

I'm really looking forward to seeing this when it comes out on DVD. For those of you who are watching it now, what do you think of Washington's manner of speaking? The reason I ask is that I read an interview with David Morse in which he said that since Washington's forebears were farmers in the west of England, he planned to use a West Country accent for Washington. |

Not sure what kind of "accent' he uses but he is very "soft-spoken". He was being sworn in as President in the last episode and the crowd could not even hear his responses. Great show and you will love it Bookworm. Worth the wait.
Does anyone else love the music?. It reminds me of the music from "Roots" and also our own "LOTM". Excellent and a joy to listen to. So perfect for this series. |
