I would be interested in hearing a reaction from anybody on this forum who goes to see "The Golden Compass" when it is released on Dec. 7.
The reason being is that I work for the religious press and there is currently a huge stink going on in Catholic and conservative Christian circles about the movie and Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy, on which it is based, being anti-Catholic and anti-Christian. Pullman himself is, avowedly, not a fan of established religion and has said as much in interviews in the past.
I've read the series, however, and could find nothing in it that was anti-Catholic or even anti-Christian. (I'm Catholic by the way.) The whole SERIES was in fact introduced to me by a friend who is a former book reviewer and a devout Catholic. When I read the series, I got the same impression as several of my other friends. We all thought the series was an allegory against totalitarianism and freedom of thought. I saw parallels between the "Gobblers" and the SS from World War II. I don't know if that's because I come from Greatest Generation parents and am more in touch with that era's history or what.
I would just like some reaction on this film when it comes out. As I said, I couldn't find anything rabidly anti-Christian in the books and I doubt I will in the film. The pre-release hysterics from many bloggers and etc. resembles that of folks who condemned "Harry Potter" as being "satanic" without having ever read the books.

| Let me amend the previous post. One sentence should read "We all thought the books were an allegory against totalitarianism and the repression of the freedom of thought." |

It's funny you mentioned this, Christina. I watched something last evening on CNN, while cooking dinner, that this movie was promoting atheism. By the look of the previews, it's gonna be good. I think there are just people out there that have nothing else better to do then ruin good things for people. It's a losing debate. |

| It's a movie for crying out loud. Some folks always have to stir up controversy. I bet the movie is harmless enough. Not familiar with the book at all but just like they said the Passion of the Christ was anti-semitic (was NOT) and all the controversy over the Davinci Code was ridiculous. The Harry Potter satanic rant was just too stupid for words. Just a movie afterall. This one will be the same quite harmless. Don't plan on going to see it though but if anyone does, I would love to hear their take. |

| I was listening to NPR today and they interviewed a Catholic theologian who thought the movie was not anti-Catholic at all. In fact she implied that the movie was not about the death of God, as some religious groups are saying, but that it is about the death of a false God, someone who sets himself up as a god. Of course, I have not seen this movie yet (since it hasn't been fully released) and I probably won't until it comes out on video. I have to say, however, that while I have very strong, Christian, religious beliefs, I personally find the constant ranting by the ultra-conservative Christian community against anything that is not straight out of the Bible very tiring. They usually bring more publicity to these events than they would have had otherwise. I just don't understand what they are trying to do. It is not their job to bring the Kingdom of God to earth. That job's already been assigned. . .to God! |

| I plan to see it, my daughters want to see it to but I don't want to take them into the theater without having some input of the content. |

| Interesting, Christina...until all the publicity about this movie being "anti-God", the students in our library were reading the book but once the media hype started, those who had checked out the book checked it back in and I've noticed nobody has checked it out recently. I believe all the ranting is because of the author's beliefs and people are not wanting others to see the movie because they don't want to support him. Just a thought. |

I remember trying to start on that trilogy several years ago -- I didn't get far ... I found it extremely slow (maybe it speeds up eventually?) My sister emailed me an anti-Compass letter recently, quoting from some knee-jerk reactionary's website. I tried to read his reasoning and found my eyes glazing over...it made no sense at all! BTW, the complete trilogy (in 1 volume) is selling at Costco right now.
My wife and I plan to take our 12 y.o. granddaughter to see it ... her mother (our ex-D.I.L.), who is a pretty conservative Christian (everything is black & white), has no problem; as she said to me "it's just a movie!" |
