I'm reading a book called The Shawnees and the War for America. The author, Colin G. Calloway, refers to a tribe of Indians called the Mahicans periodically. They were an Algonquin-speaking people who originally lived in the Hudson Valley and western MA. Does anyone know anything about this tribe? Do they still exist? I had heard that Cooper's Mohicans were fictional, but maybe he based his LOTM characters on this tribe? Is this just another spelling? Are they perhaps related to the current day Mohegans? I had just never heard of Mahicans before.
And how sad it is to learn all the happened to the Shawnees. What a tribe! So organized initially when encountered by the Europeans!
Incidentally, this is a great book, and apparently the first in a series of upcoming books in the "Penguin Library of American Indian History."
