John Harkins has been to EVERY Gathering to date ... alas, he won't be with us this year. Got this letter [he has no Internet access - we correspond the old fashion way, by US Mail!] the other day.

This is one letter I do hate to write. But, I have to.
I lost my job on Dec. 21, 2001 after 35 years and 2 months there in this textile mill. I lost my insurance and all my vacation time at the same time ...

... I had called the Geneva Motel and made reservations for my 4 night stay with a down payment for Wednesday night, June 19th. Now, I have to cancel my trip to Mohican Land this year as I have no time built up to attend #5, and I just got this new job in a hardware store, and I won't be covered by insurance for 90 days - August 1, 2002. That insurance is as important as my job.
Believe me, I hate having to miss #5. I sure would like to ride the Nolichucky on Friday 21st, that would be a great joy to me ...

I would like to continue to get your newsletter. [I print out the Gathering Page for him & send it on ... RF] A lot of people who attend the Gathering will want to know where I am, and I would appreciate it if you would tell them why I'm not there this year. And, I don't like missing out on being able to get the #5 t-shirt, but I'm not able to be there this year.
I will miss seeing everyone and all the festivities that will take place. But my thoughts will be on going with the time for #5 as everyone enjoys. And again, I'm sorry I won't be there.

Hi Rich,
I hope you will let John know how much he will be missed by all of us. It won't be the same without him. I just realized the Evans' won't be there either. We'll miss them too. And the Sweetsers of course...

Oh Man, I so hate to hear that about John. Seems to be the way of it for so many...including my very best bud Cecelia, who won't be attending for just the same reason. There are so many that will be missed. I had already noticed that the names of both Johns weren't on the list. They have both added so much to the gatherings and are two of the finest fellows one could hope to meet. They certainly will be missed!
