What wonderful news, Rich! Thanks and praise and glory to God for answering the prayers of so many. As for those wonderful doctors and nurses who took such good care of Sophia all these many long weeks and months, God certainly guided them in helping to bring about a miracle.
Thank you, Rich & Lainey, for continuing to share Sophia's story with all of us and congratulations on this happy, happy news! |

I'm so glad to hear this, Rich.
I stand in awe at the way you and Lainey have handled this for so long, not to mention Sophia herself. |

Hi Rich, I've been absent a long time but thinking of you often. I'm so shocked and sad to hear that after all this time, Sophia has been through so much!! I am having trouble with reflux myself and know just how dreadfully painful it is, but I can't imagine it lasting as long and as often as she has it, and with her tiny little esophogus!! Mine is in pain, so I can only imagine what she has gone through.
I hope you and Lainey and the entire family get to have her at home soon, with her getting better and better every day!!

Well, let's see ... what's there to report on the little bugger today? Hmmm ... well, she's over 7lbs. now. Well over. She, as they told us she would, quickly recovered from her surgery on Wednesday ... tylenol was all she needed for pain after about 24 hours. The incision is healing quickly & nicely, and she's eating again. Off all respiratory apparatus. Off all meds. ALL meds! Her only intake, other than formula, is an iron supplement. That's about it. Oh, her eyes are fine. She's thriving!!! It's boring, I know, but we'd have it no other way.
So, that's it.
OH! Except for one little, teeny, weeny particular ...
SHE'S SCHEDULED FOR DISCHARGE THIS FRIDAY!!!!
Hallelujah!!! Friday, April 4, 2003 - a mere 3 days short of 6 months in the hospital, she can come home! BUT, as punishment for putting us through this ordeal, we're leaving her there till Sunday, April 6 ... one week from today. Actually, we'll be doing her a favor ... 2 more days of peace & quiet! Little does she know what she's in for when she gets here!

Seriously, we're leaving her there till the weekend so all can be home when she gets here; till Sunday because Sonya, her primary RN, is off on Saturday. She deserves to say goodbye.
This still hasn't sunk in ... but Thursday we'll get our CPR, G-tube feeding, monitor training and then it'll all be over! Finally! Over! Her story is going to have a happy ending after all, one that just didn't seem to be in the cards back in January.
I'll being taking several weeks of Family Medical Leave off from work, beginning late this week, to help care for the little critter.
Thank you God, for answering my prayers ...
And thank all of you who have likewise prayed and/or expressed your sympathies & well-wishes in this thread. Your kindness & sensitivity on this matter will never be forgotten by me. Every one of you has earned a special place in my heart, and someday, your loving words will be read by little Sophia. Can you believe it?
I wonder what she'll think?!?

Hello to all of you who have been keeping up with the story of little Sophie......I had to put my two cents in after reading over all of this.
I am Sonya, and I have had the pleasure of caring for this sweet little girl. I got to know the Federici family while I was caring for another little boy, and I signed up to primary Sophia when he left. Sophia has touched so many lives and hearts, and she doesn't even realize it. Everyone in the unit...nurses, other families who are experiencing similiar trials, and our volunteers....all know Sophia and the brave fight she has endured these past six months. She has truly had tons and tons of people praying for her.
God has a plan for her life...I just know it. I hope all of you will have the pleasure of spending time with this sweet baby like I have. I have enjoyed caring for her, and I am so glad that she will be going home with her mom, dad and siblings a week from today. She will not want for love where she is going. I will never forget the day we had her party, and the pure pleasure I felt watching her look around the room at her brothers and sisters. She was so content...it was as if she had spent every day of these last few months with her brothers and sisters as opposed to fighting to live!
When Sophia reads this some day....she will know the impact she had on so many lives. She is a miracle, and I feel so blessed to have watched it unfold. I love you Sophia Rosa Maria.........you will always be in my heart.
Much Love, Sonya |

Sonya,
How sweet of you to come here and let us all have the pleasure of meeting you. I know that you are held in the highest regard with this family. All of us here have uplifted her in our prayers and I am a true believer in prayer and its power. However, having said that, I also know that it's loving and caring people like you who have tended to her, cared for and nurtured her, and loved her that have been instrumental in her recovery as well. Thank you. |

Sonya, Thank you for being there! My son is now 6 1/2 months old and I can't even imagine what Rich and Elaine have been going through. I'm sure though that your presence made things a little brighter and helped them through all of this. God Bless You and the rest of the staff who took care of little Sophia!

Wow! I read that bit from Sonya, and the eyes teared up rather moistly. And you all thought I was kidding about the staff there! Sophia ... and all the little babies there ... are so very fortunate to have folks like her caring for them. I cannot heap upon them all enough praise!
Sonya, by the way, is the nurse who commented on Sophia's eyes in the story I recounted in the A Most Unusual Day thread in the Into the Wilderness forum back in December. That was between the time that Sophia had the skin lesion problems and then hit rock bottom with the pre-diagnosis of chylous ascites.
Anyway, that's all past now in no small measure due to the dedication & love of people like Sonya. How do you thank people like that? |

Hi, Sonya. We've been watching and waiting for the wonderful time when Rich and Elaine can bring little Sophia home. You are a special person to give her so much loving care. In my early years of nursing (over 20 years ago...eeeek!)I worked with infants at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. I can tell you that all these years later several of those sweet babies are still with me in my memories. You will, no doubt, always remember Sophia and her special family. And they will ALWAYS remember you!!

Well Mohican Friends, It seems like we are WAY behind on the news of the newest little Federici. We don't visit the board much (obviously) and just heard of little Sophia's birth yesterday. We are sorry we haven't been able to pray for her but we will sure be praying now,you can be sure. God has a reason for everything but sometimes I just wish He would fill us in! We will miss seeing you all in June, but first things first, and there is always next year! We think of many of you so often,Eric and Sharon you made a definite impression on Nathan the first year. He introduced me to a song by a Christian Contempory Artist that reminds him of you guys,it's a sweet song that he thinks describes you. We hope all is well with EVERYONE and hopefully we will see you next year. God bless you all, with special blessings on little Sophia and her family. With much fondness, Mark,Nathan and Kathy |

It has been a long, difficult road full of worry, tears, perhaps some despair, and definitely some triumphs. And now... your time of joy and laughter, as you help Sophia to grow into a beautiful young woman, begins! Enjoy every minute! You have been blessed by God! |
