"She still has a paralysis of her vocal chords (traumatized by long term intubation) & can't cry with sound. In time ..."
There was a time about 3 years ago, when my daughter was 15, that I could have seriously wished for a paralysis of her vocal chords!
But that time has passed... and this time, for you, shall pass also. (If there are typos, please forgive, as I am having a little trouble seeing the screen right now...) I just know that Sophia is going to be the absolute Joy of your lives!
Grow, Sophia! Get strong, Sophia! |

To say I am thrilled is a vast understatement. Damn, she's good! She's gonna come roaring out of that hospital and into your home before you know it. We're keeping up the prayers. I'm heading out to look at the photo album. With love, Chris |

Sophia's guardian angel whispers in her ears every night about the great love God has for her.She falls asleep and the angel remains to watch over her, never to leave her side. |

Rich and Elaine -- I can't tell you how happy I am to hear of Sophia's progress! And that you got to hold her, Rich. I feel like God smiled and said, "I've been holding on to her so long -- you take over for an hour, dad!" But rest assured she's NEVER really out of his hands or his eyes. So happy for you both -- she'll continue to be in my prayers and thoughts. Peace, Christina |

What a wonderful update. The Lord works in many ways. Just when you think you have had all you can take, he gives you an hour and a drink from the bottle. |

It is so wonderful to hear of Sophia's progress - it brought tears to my eyes. Not that her getting stronger isn't a surprise, she has a lot of love and prayer behind her. Rich, I'm so glad you finally held her, what a joy that must have been. And she drank from a bottle? Oh gosh, now I gotta go squeeze the dickens of my two little ones....

Rich & Elaine,
Thanks for the Sophia update! Talk about a roller coaster, Rich! You can tell we're all holding on for the ride right along with you guys! Nice job on the technical report, Elaine - especially the part about the hug therapy. Take care, you two. Jayne |

Brief Sophia Update:
- moved to a crib from the incubator!
- still only on the vacu-therm respiratory support
- on 100% feedings - some via bottle
- for a while there, was off ALL IVs - however, she's now hooked up for a 3 days a week/24 hours at a time lipids [fatty stuff] supplement
- on NO meds
- weighs 5lb 6oz. [though, still, a portion of that is fluids]
- hasn't needed her belly tapped to drain fluids in ... 2 weeks now?
- belly, though, still full
- vitals generally very stable

Small corrections ...
- She is still on meds but they are by mouth, not IV. - Weight is 5'7oz; probably about 12 oz of which is the ascites fluid.

And she's having laser eye surgery tomorrow to seal off new growth blood vessels in the retina. A fairly common condition among preemies who've had long term intubation (too long on the respirator), if left uncorrected she'd likely develop detached retinas and/or blindness. Success rate is excellent ... |
